[SEMIOPEN LOG] EXPEDITION 1 TEAM 2

 Semi-open log for the first expedition, Team 2 (Hiyoshi-Oshitari Y- Uion - Ibu).

How this works: only characters involved in this event can tag in this log. Set up categories/threads as needed, for example :Camping, Digging, More Digging. Other characters can also tag eg if someone makes a comm call, but make sure you ask/inform that person first, and this should not take up significant portions of the log. General cruisin on day one thread

Ah yes, beautiful scenic Izanagi, complete with picturesque views of rocks, sand, and... rotting dead sandworms. God. They were everywhere. Hiyoshi was CERTAIN he could see finger marks in the one they were driving past right now.

"...someone needs to put Tooyama on a leash."

Niou had been carefully monitoring his radar system since they left Yomi, occasionally glancing up to check that there still was no sign of sandworm activity around them. He looked up properly as Hiyoshi spoke and laughed... yep, definitely dead according to the radar. And when he looked closer... it was just lying on the sand, its body ripped almost completely in half. Definitely dead according to that too.

"I actually don't understand how he's not dead. Or do you think he'd be the type to be able to rip his way out of a sandworm if he got eaten?"

"Yes. He would."

There's no question about it. He'd come bursting out, just like in a low-budget movie, covered in worm guts or whatever the hell was inside of them.

"There's rumours going around that he's been genetically modified somehow. Like that old Earth comic, X-Men." But then again if that was true, the scientists REALLY sucked at picking their test subjects. Who would willingly give super strength to someone that out of control.

Niou would pay to see that. And then hope that Ibu had filmed the whole thing so he could watch it again.

"You know, I could see that." Niou had seem the kid just a couple of times and both of them... had been a bit disturbing, honestly. "I don't know how you actually train with him without being killed."

If Niou could see Hiyoshi through his helmet right now, he'd see the deadest expression.

"I had to specifically tell him not to kill me."

"It's probably good for you to fight someone with a less... structured style?"

Maybe???

Niou sighed loudly and he was already hating sitting down in one position for so long. This was going to be a long 2 weeks. "You should probably keep reminding him every time you do train with him though, he doesn't seem like the sort to remember those sorts of things."

Wow, way to hone in on his biggest weakness Niou. Hiyoshi might even be huffy about it, if he weren't the stoic asshole type.

"What he does goes beyond 'unstructured'. And don't worry. I know." Unfortunately, Hiyoshi had to interact with Kintarou on a regular basis. Which gives birth to a thought: "Imagine the poor people who were in the shuttle with him."

"I saw the first time the three of you were fighting," Niou said with a laugh. "He had a big metal thing he was using as a weapon?"

Most likely Tooayama had rampaged around the shuttle for 3 months and broken things. "Maybe they put him in a cage under heavy sedation for the trip?"

"Yeah. That's plausible."

[chickens]

"Sometimes I think I could build some kind of launcher to stick him in. And just shoot him from the top of the base at some sandworms."

"He'd probably enjoy it. You'd never get a moment's peace again he'd want you to spend all your time launching him at stuff."

[chickens]

"That's when I'd give the job over to you. So you can test how well his body survives long drops to the ground."

"Pass. I'm not volunteering to put up with him even for that."

[chickens]

"Maybe hand him over the science, then, they can run some tests on him. See if he's really genetically modified or just some unnatural beast."

"Do you think they have restraints strong enough to hold him down?"

Ibu listened to the conversation about Tooyama. While he hadn't had the pleasure (or displeasure) of meeting the able spaceman, he did think the young man would make for an excellent interview for one of the promotional videos.

He focused on getting b-roll of the planet as they drove towards the water belt since that would likely be important later on. Pulling away from the camera's lens, he looked out the window then back into the camera. "Is it getting darker for anyone else or is it just my camera? Which it really shouldn't be since it's fully charged and I brought extra batteries just in case. I also know my memory card isn't full. Fifty terabytes takes a long time to fill up and I made sure this one was blank and formatted before inserting it into the camera."

DING DING ALERT MODE. Changes meant bad things. What nefarious things could possibly be happening? An attack from above??? Hiyoshi is immediately up, gun in hand, searching the horizon and... nothing. Just clear skies and more sand.

"It's just the sky, Ibu-san."

Just the sky? Based on images Ibu had studied... "If so, that must mean we are getting closer to the water. As you may recall, the closer to the water, the more the sky takes on a deeper hue. What we might refer to as 'twilight'," he said excitedly. "It is also likely that we will experience a drop in temperature once we step outside of the vehicle." Which meant he needed to pack his camera into its weather-proof casing.

"Say that instead next time." Mildly cranky Hiyoshi? It's more likely than you think. "I was worried about something coming from above." Pause. "...Do things actually fly on this planet?"

"I wanted to make sure that I wasn't the only person who saw it. Troubleshooting is necessary sometimes with electronics, but I'm satisfied to know that my camera isn't the culprit and it's just us getting closer to where we will be studying which may or may not have flying creatures. I didn't see any on my way to the planet, but given the atmosphere, it stands to reason that something should exist. I think it would be interesting to see like a flying manta ray. They had them on Earth, but not Mars, so I would rather like to see one on another planet. Though, I suppose you couldn't call it a manta ray. Would you call it an Izanagian ray, like with the sandworm, or would you name it something else? I don't mean you, specifically, Hiyoshi sir, but the general you as Doctor Oshitari sir is very skilled in this area and no doubt wouldn't mind naming something he discovers."

Sorry Shinji but Hiyoshi is absolutely zoning out. And dreaming about eating manta ray.

The momentary silence rang in Yuushi's ears. Was... no one speaking? He was torn between wanting to answer Ibu and basking in the quiet, but he was sure it wouldn't last, so he said, "If it sufficiently resembles a ray, that could be a valid name, but as in the case of the Elizabethan Crawler, it could be based on some other distinctive feature. You are welcome to name a flying ray, should we find one."

What was it that the Earth philosopher said? If you stare too long into the abyss...

Niou reached over to lightly hit Yuushi on the arm - stop encouraging him!

"We should pause for food," he said, reaching into his pack to pull out vacuum packed bag of boiled eggs #1. "I got gifted some eggs to share."

[oshitari_yuushi]

Yuushi breaks out of the trance and nods, bringing the vehicle to a stop so that Niou can shove eggs into people's mouths to keep them from talking.

"Mm, I think we could all do with a break."

No talking while you eat or you may choke on your food and die, he said inwardly to no one in particular.

Oh thank god, Yuushi was helping him out here. Niou had originally only planned on sharing the eggs with Hiyoshi (with maybe half of one to Yuushi), but if it would stop them from talking, he was here for this.

One egg each. Niou helpfully handed them out and started to peel his own.

"Let me know if you need to switch drivers, Dr Oshitari. I can drive a little."
