[SEMIOPEN LOG] EXPEDITION 1 TEAM 2

 Semi-open log for the first expedition, Team 2 (Hiyoshi-Oshitari Y- Uion - Ibu).

How this works: only characters involved in this event can tag in this log. Set up categories/threads as needed, for example :Camping, Digging, More Digging. Other characters can also tag eg if someone makes a comm call, but make sure you ask/inform that person first, and this should not take up significant portions of the log. Ah yes, beautiful scenic Izanagi, complete with picturesque views of rocks, sand, and... rotting dead sandworms. God. They were everywhere. Hiyoshi was CERTAIN he could see finger marks in the one they were driving past right now.

"...someone needs to put Tooyama on a leash."

Niou had been carefully monitoring his radar system since they left Yomi, occasionally glancing up to check that there still was no sign of sandworm activity around them. He looked up properly as Hiyoshi spoke and laughed... yep, definitely dead according to the radar. And when he looked closer... it was just lying on the sand, its body ripped almost completely in half. Definitely dead according to that too.

"I actually don't understand how he's not dead. Or do you think he'd be the type to be able to rip his way out of a sandworm if he got eaten?"

"Yes. He would."

There's no question about it. He'd come bursting out, just like in a low-budget movie, covered in worm guts or whatever the hell was inside of them.

"There's rumours going around that he's been genetically modified somehow. Like that old Earth comic, X-Men." But then again if that was true, the scientists REALLY sucked at picking their test subjects. Who would willingly give super strength to someone that out of control.

Niou would pay to see that. And then hope that Ibu had filmed the whole thing so he could watch it again.

"You know, I could see that." Niou had seem the kid just a couple of times and both of them... had been a bit disturbing, honestly. "I don't know how you actually train with him without being killed."

If Niou could see Hiyoshi through his helmet right now, he'd see the deadest expression.

"I had to specifically tell him not to kill me."

Stupid conversation round one: short-nosed bear sasquatch theory

"--Also, the air is really thin at those altitudes. Humans aren't thinking properly with those blood oxygen levels. If you're hunting in the Andes and you don't expect to see a bear and suddenly you see one standing on it's hind legs in the distance, of course it's going to look like a monster. They did genetic tests on the fur of a pelt that someone claimed came from a yeti, and it came back as the DNA of a short-faced bear that was supposed to be extinct. Of course they lost the records because people were sloppy back then, so there's no way to prove it, but IF short-faced bears were still surviving in small numbers way up in the mountains it could explain sightings there. Not in North America though, the sightings there don't have a convenient explanation like that and--"

"-and then in the Appalachians you have reports of wild people. That could have something to do with the sasquatch sightings, but they're interesting in their own right. Imagine becoming wild. Living away from people, no contact with anyone, you probably can't even speak--"

The growing boredom from staring out at the monotonous landscape, and his sleep debt were finally starting to catch up to Niou. The sand was just endless and all looked the same. And thus far, the radars had all been silent. And there was a limit to how much good pinching himself on the leg and biting the inside of his lip did to staying awake eventually.

During one of the monologuing - so much monologuing. Why was there so much monologuing from two people?! - Niou dozed off.

There was only so much napping one could do in a moving vehicle on a planetside that was never dark, and Yuushi opened his eyes from a vision of sandworms that may or may not have been a dream just in time to see Niou's head droop forward.

"Mr Uion," he said, waving hand in his general direction because he was afraid poking him might startle him, "Do you want to switch again?"

Niou jerked at the voice suddenly next to him and oh shit he was driving. He yawned and shook his head to try and wake up. "Yeah, I don't think I can drive right now." At least not alertly to swerve or stop if a sandworm suddenly attacked.

"I'll sit next to Hiyoshi again."

Yuushi nodded. "Or you could try finishing that nap your body seems to need," he suggested. He was pretty sure that the man probably never slept, what with the whole double life thing.

"If Ibu is right we might be arriving at the waterside soon... And if nothing looks like it wants to eat us there, we can set up camp."

He was going to protest that he didn't need to nap. Especially after having been woken up, he was actually feeling OK, now that he was sitting down again. But then...

"I'll... try to sleep now, then," Niou said reluctantly. As in, close his eyes and keep an ear on his surroundings. "And I can stay up while you guys get some sleep and keep watch."

Since Ibu had noticed the skies darkening before most everyone else, it made sense to him that he also noticed the environment changing. The sand looked more white than before and it all looked a bit... frosty.

"Could someone check the monitors for location? I think we may be at or close to our first destination." Or at least to a stopping point because he really wanted to stretch. "I've already switched to my weather-protection gear coverings so there's no need to wait for me when we do stop. Our suits are also made to withstand the change in temperature, right? As there's little to no sun, it's likely to be much colder here. Which reminds me of the expedition I took to the southern Martian pole. We had thermal gear, of course, but we were all still quite cold and couldn't be outside for more than 30 minutes before needing to go back inside for 2 hours to warm back up. This meant we could only trek about 10 minutes from our base, do some minimal work, then make the hike back. Unfortunately, this meant we didn't get as much done as we wanted until we were able to set up a chain of mini-bases. Those only held about three of us at a time, so we had to be careful."

"The suits will be fine." On the long days together, Hiyoshi had acquired the important skill of picking the important information out of Shinji's tangents.

Shinji was right though, the scenery had changed enough that they must be drawing near. Hiyoshi took a deep breath. There was no tell-tale smell of salt in the air, but who knew what the composition of this 'ocean' was anyway. The air had something to it that made Hiyoshi to it though, and he waved at the others.

"Send the drone out ahead of us. I think Ibu-san is right."

Yuushi nodded, grateful that Hiyoshi had parsed through the deluge of Ibu's words.

They were sufficiently far from the water's edge that anything unexpected from the ocean wouldn't put them in immediate danger.

"I believe Mr Uion's drones can bring us some initial samples of the ocean water. If it's not toxic, which it shouldn't be, we can risk a closer look."

Niou did a check on the radars - no sign of movement in the sand at least. "Looks like it should be okay to at least get out here. Stretch your legs."

He did get up, to climb over to the back to where his drone controls here, powering them on and grumbling a bit as he settled back down. "Sending them out now. Let me know if you see anything out on the water." Just in case his radars didn't pick anything up.

The first couple of drones lifted off the top of the vehicle and flew over to the water, lowering down to take surface samples of the water.

Hiyoshi doesn't need to be told twice, and is already kitting up with a sample collection kit, and most importantly a really big gun.

"Okay Ibu-san, get your camera and whatever you need. There's two rules while we're out there: if you see something, say something; and if I give you an order, listen."

Time to take the filmmaker for a walk.

"I like you and I think you're competent."

Oh my god he actually did it.

"... Thank you?" He hadn't thought through how he'd actually respond because Hiyoshi wasn't acutally meant to go along with it. "What prompted that?"

Niou made a show of checking through his comm and snorted as he read through the conversation again. "I'd probably pick you for my team as well."

Hiyoshi only nods because he's playing this cool as hell, but oh, haha, it feels kind of nice to be picked, whoops. He's pretty happy about it.
