[OPEN LOG] EMERGENCY DRILL

It is 0200 UTC. A loud wailing emergency siren pierces the quiet of the sleeping base, waking you up instantly (or not). In your bleary-eyed state you realize this is the evacuation signal you’ve all been trained to recognise. Time to go!

Notes:
- Only dept heads were told about the drill, but they only knew that it would be held, not when
- The only ones who know the full picture are Byodoin and CDR Ryuuzaki
- Everyone has gone through the safety training and ideally knows to evacuate to the designated outdoor location… right?

After making sure his roommate wasn't about to be left behind during the evacuation, Sanada quickly made his way to engineering where he suspected Niou would be. It didn't hurt to come down here and make sure all of the engineers were following the protocol for this particular evacuation signal and wrapping up final procedures before heading to the stairs.

Sanada greeted the engineers he saw and shouted out a few commands before marching up to Niou's door and giving it a firm knock. "Niou, time to evacuate." He had promised to carry him up the stairs to safety if it was ever required after all.

Niou was scrolling through the messages on the communicator - oh ho ho, some late night conversations had been happening that he had to catch up on - and he looked up at the knock on his door. "It's fine, Sanada. I'm prepared to just die here from whatever calamity it is. Evacuate with the rest of them." He reclined back a little bit more in his chair.

Sanada frowned at the response. That was not what he had wanted to hear. But at least it seemed like Niou was alone and he wasn't about to walk in on anything unseemly.

Sanada used his override code to let himself into Niou's office, took one look at Niou and sighed. "This was not the plan we agreed on."

"This is not the Rapture, Sanada. I'm not being asked to climb stairs to heaven, it's just stairs up to the ground floor." Niou just looked amused. He glanced up and down Sanadda and his grin just widened. "And if it was us journeying up to our eternal life... that's a great outfit for it. I approve." The yukata with boots was a hilarious combination.

"If you trust me to carry you to whatever the Rapture is, then you trust me to carry you up a few flights of steps," Sanada said. He crossed his arms over his chest as Niou looked him over and tried to glare him down. It wasn't very effective on Niou but it would at least show him he wasn't impressed. "I was sleeping. And I'm not staying in this. We're changing into our nanosuits. We're going to make sure engineering is clear and then we're leaving. Together." He was not above dragging Niou out of engineering if he had to.

"It's the end of the world, kind of," Niou said in half-hearted explanation. And then sighed, pushing himself up out of the chair. "Yeah okay, fine, let's evacuate." He grabbed his emergency nanosuit from his office and then stared at Sanada. "Go get changed in your own space, I'm not getting naked in front of you. And then we can do a sweep of engineering and you can victoriously carry me up the stairs the evacuation point."

Sanada gave an annoyed huff, like he was going to change with Niou anyway. His suit was still in his office anyway. "After you're changed, sweep your designated area, I'll do mine, and we'll meet in the main lab." They could confirm everything was set in the right mode and then head up the stairs. Sanada hated the thought of being the last one up in an evacuation but being an acting co-department-head meant that they had expectations to secure their area.

Giving Niou a final look to make sure he really was going to change and do the sweep and not just give up and wait for death again, he headed to his office to get changed.

"Yeah okay." And with Sanada on alert about the whole thing, it wasn't like he could just get away with embracing his fate again. Niou sighed and went over to his blindspot corner to change and he was sure that if anyone was looking at the camera would see the occasional limb poking out from it.

Reluctantly suited up (and with a coat on top for decency), Niou snatched up his tablet and swept through one half of engineering, sticking his head into all the spaces to see if anyone was in there. Thankfully empty." He headed to the main lab to wait for Sanada.

Sanada stripped the second his office door closed behind him and moved around the room to grab his nanosuit and engineering datapad. He set it up to run a quick diagnostics on engineering to make sure all the systems were being run as they should be during the evacuation and got dressed.

He slung the engineering equipment bag over his body and was just about to leave the room when he spotted the shogi board. Making a decision, he hastily swept the pieces inside and tucked it under his arm as he did his sweep. There were a couple engineers just finishing up their task that he hurried along but other than them, engineering was empty.

It didn't take him long to get to the main lab and smiled as he saw Niou already there and dressed to evacuate. "Any problems?" Sanada asked. Everything looked okay on his datapad but that didn't mean other things couldn't go wrong.

"None. Everyone got out, we can lock the labs down when we leave." Niou glanced at Sanada's collection of equipment - which would save him the trouble of hauling his own toolkit up the stairs - and then paused at the... Shogi board? Yeah okay, he could respect Sanada and his love of the game, he supposed. "You okay to carry all of that? You're meant to be carrying me as well."

Sanada nodded, pleased that engineering was evacuating according to plan so far. "The last two crew members from my side just left. We should do the same. And you're carrying this," Sanada said as he passed the shogi board over to Niou. "If this really is a drill, we're going to have nothing to do for hours while security runs all the evacuation checks." In a real evacuation, they'd probably be kept busy either trying to repair the problem that caused them to evacuate or setting up temporary shelter while people were transported to the outpost.

"... Yeah okay." He had honestly been half thinking about just resting on a boyfriend or reading on his tablet if it was actually a drill, but playing shogi with Sanada worked. Niou held onto the shogi board and then faced the reality that he was meant to be carried by Sanada up the stairs, which was a huge leap up from... holding hands which they'd done before once. "Uhh... this is kind of an inappropriate time to ask, but can I hug you? And then we can go?"

Sanada didn't think now was the best time for hug but he had long ago accepted the fact that Niou was weird. So despite the evacuation sirens still blaring, he held out his arms and stepped closer and waited for Niou to take the last step in so they could get the hug done and then climb up to safety.

Oh, haha he hadn't actually expected Sanada to go along with it and it was suddenly quite terrifying. And a wild part of him thought about just saying he'd message Akutsu to come and get him or something. But that would probably result in Sanada hauling him over the shoulder and dragging him out anyway. So Niou closed the distance to quickly and awkwardly hug Sanada, patting him briefly on the back. Okay.

Niou pulled away. "Yeah that as weird." Weird and uncomfortable, but not awful. He could deal with it for the climb up the stairs. "Alright, let's go."

"Cute." Byodoin commented over the loudspeaker. "Now both of you actually get out. I like you both too much to see you die terrible deaths."

Sanada barely got his arms around Niou before the other was stepping back. Odd hug but as long as Niou was satisfied that's what mattered. He was just nodding for them to head out when he jumped at Byodoin's voice cutting through the sirens. He looked toward the camera and gave a nod, and perhaps a slight glare, before heading out of engineering with Niou. "We definitely aren't cute," He muttered to Niou as he led him to the stairs.

Niou laughed - at least B3 was looking pretty clear at this point as they headed to the stairs. "I've definitely been told otherwise. About myself, that is. Multiple times." Much to his endless horror. "You might have to ask Renji if you're cute or not."

He sighed as they got to the stairs... his enemy. "Okay. I'm getting on your back, right?"

"He'll say I'm cute. He's known me since I was a chubby-cheeked toddler and thinks it's his job to tease me," Sanada said. He looked at the stairs and looked at Niou. He supposed Niou wasn't that much heavier than the rucksack he was forced to carry on marches during military training.

"I was thinking over my shoulder but I guess since you're awake we can do a piggyback. Get on." He knelt down to make it easier for Niou to climb on

"You are not carrying me over your shoulder up 5 flights of stairs," Niou said flatly. "I would actally rather die." He supposed a piggyback was tolerable and Niou seriously considered just going back to engineering and locking himself in there. But he could hear screaming further up the stairs, and a look up showed... Tooyama climbing up the middle with people on his back. Which was... terrifying.

He so, so reluctantly climbed onto Sanada's back, holding onto the shogi board. Would this have been more or less awkward in pyjamas, he wondered. "If this ever occurs in the future, please make sure you wake me up for it."

"You don't think the blaring sirens wouldn't wake you up?" Sanada asked as he stood up. He took a second to get used to the weight on his back and shifted his grip on Niou's thighs before heading up the steps. He glanced up at the continued noise from Kintarou and those around him and decided to just ignore that and focus on climbing. It wasn't going to be the most fun walk up but he'd just tell himself it was his workout for the day and push through it.

"I'm just making sure all possiblities are covered." Niou twitched at the hands on his legs and god this was so awkward. He sighed and enjoyed the steady "step step step" of Sanada climbing up the stairs instead. "I'll have to talk to the others to figure out what to do in the case of you not being available," he said, as way of casual conversation to make this whole thing less weird (maybe). "I'd so hate for you to deal with the guilt of having not been around and therefore responsible for my perishing in a failing colony."

"Why would I not be available?" Sanada asked as he continued his steady pace up the steps. Even if they were somewhere else, they should head to engineering to make sure it's secure before evacuating. And in most cases they'd probably be needed to fix whatever was going wrong to stop it from getting worse.
