[SEMIOPEN LOG] EXPEDITION 5, ALL TEAMS

Semi-open log for the 4th expedition, Team 1 (Niou, Marui, Zaizen) and Team 2 (Sanada, Oshitari K, Mizuki) + Ibu tagging along to whichever he pleases. Technically they're in the same place so he can switch, too.

How this works: only characters involved in this event can tag in this log.

Pre-Expedition Events (Open until everyone gets tired of it): e.g. Training and Packing. These events will involve only training/supply personnel (e.g. Medical for First Aid, Engineering for equipment, Logistics for requisitions, Tachibana for rations etc) and the personnel going on the mission. This will also include everyone hopping on the shuttle to get to the seaside expedition location (total 7 expedition folks + one NPC pilot)

Expedition: (Open until everyone gets tired of it): Set up categories/threads as needed, for example :Camping, Digging, More Digging. Other characters can also tag eg if someone makes a comm call, but make sure you ask/inform that person first, and this should not take up significant portions of the log. As always, ask in the Discord if you have any questions.

Just to refresh your memory: Team 1 does outpost related scouting and evaluation of outpost locations, + a little drone diving, Team 2 goes looking for mystery organism(s) and clears out threats. Both teams will regroup in the shuttle at the end of each day to eat and rest.

Note: Expect bad weather, rain, and occasional disruptions to communications. Try not to get lost and keep some water on you.

There maaaay be an event halfway through the expedition :D

Mizuki was not having a good time. It was just about as windy as the last time he was out on expedition, back out there on that mountain, and there was a noticeable static charge in the air.

There was a storm incoming, or Mizuki would eat his boots.

"Should we not...find shelter?" he asked with some trepidation.

Kenya nodded. He trusted Mizuki-san's instincts. "Yeah, I think we should. Can't find a nest-building creature if we're dead." He chuckled nervously.

"Come on you two, you just have to be good at dodging. As swift as the wind," Sanada said with a laugh. Though he was also scanning the horizon for either some shelter or at least enough objects taller than they were. It would be just their luck to pick a hideout that was infested by monsters. And as good as it felt to have weapons back in his hand, he'd rather not get into a surprise firefight with lethal creatures with Mizuki and the speedy Oshitari right beside him.

As swift as the wind. Mizuki looked at his companions, who probably had a better chance at accomplishing that than himself.

Though perhaps Sanada would be struck first, because he was taller.

"I don't think I have your reflexes," said Mizuki doubtfully, also looking around. He spotted some strange structures in the distance that looked awfully like the ones in their mission brief... "Is that what I think it is?" He pointed in their direction.

Sanada looked where Mizuki was pointing and then pulled out his datapad to check the brief and gave a reluctant nod. It was what they were looking for but in this situation, he'd rather have their mission be unfinished. "It matches the information we have. We need to remain quiet and calm." He took a deep breath himself and considered the possibilities of what they'd find and how they would face it.

Kenya was pretty nervous because being calm was not his specialty. Still, he knew he had to keep it cool. "Maybe whatever built them is long gone?" He said hopefully.

"Nobody was home when Houou-san was found in it," added Mizuki hopefully. He didn't really want to go in there either, but it was part of their mission and the only shelter in the vicinity. "We'll follow your lead, Sanada-san."

Sanada looked at the two and then at the structures. It would be best to go in with as much information as they could get. "Let's try the scanners and see if they can pick up anything," Sanada said. They had scanners to detect body heat and movement so hopefully one of those would pick something up if it was over there. It was hard to say just how well it would work with the storm coming in and if the alien creature wasn't moving but it was better than nothing.

Kenya gave a brief nod and started scanning. Unfortunately, his scanner wasn't working too great. "I think I'm getting interference..." He sighed and kept scanning. "Yeah, I think mine is on the fritz, it keeps giving me heat signals for the rocks."

Sanada stepped closer to Kenya and leaned in to see the scanner. It wasn't a surprise but still disappointing. Maybe he'd see if Niou could rig up something to make it work better in the storms tonight. The man seemed to get antsy without something to fidget with, especially when he was avoiding sleeping like a normal person.

"Let's get closer and try again. Keep your eyes and ears sharp and be ready to defend yourselves." He didn't expect Mizuki or Kenya to actually take down anything fearsome they encountered. Being able to repel it or create a distraction to get away was more than enough for this mission.

Mizuki was sorely disappointed by the tech, but then he remembered something.

"Wait, wait," he said hastily, tapping Sanada timidly on the arm. "Didn't they find hostile lifeforms that looked like rocks? Would they be responsible for the heat signatures? Perhaps we should approach with caution..."

"Life forms in the rocks?" Kenya made a face. "They're just rocks...right?" Kenya stepped forward, as slow as he possibly could. When he did, one of the rocks moved, which scared him enough to have him fall on his butt. "Hostile, you said?!?!"

"Didn't you read the mission briefings?" Sanada asked Kenya, looking unimpressed at his panicking. He thought the man was more composed and reliable than this. "And I'll take the rocks over sandworms." Not that sandworms had been much of a problem since Kintarou had gotten to them but they were still a risk and a big one.

Oh those things were creepy!!

"Oshitari-kun, be careful!" Mizuki hurriedly helped Kenya up, in case the not-rocks decided to attack them all at once and they needed to run. He then bravely hid behind Sanada.

"I think..Gakuto-san used a flamethrower."

"I did read it..." Kenya frowned as he followed Mizuki behind Sanada. "I just forgot." He watched the rocks carefully. "Kind of fascinating when you're expecting it..."

Sanada glanced at Kenya and then back at the rocks that supposedly had tentacles? He really didn't want a close-up look at them if possible. "Let's try electronic pulses to repel them. As long as we stay standing, our boots should protect us if we accidentally get in range." He also wasn't sure how conducive the sand would be since it was damp this close to the planet's weird ocean. Those sorts of equations were Yanagi's and Inui's specialties. Still, it was their best option for right now. He dug one of the eletro pulses out of his bag and set it up before tossing it toward the rocks. It dropped and after a few moments glowed and sent out a pulse.

Mizuki tamped down a squeak as the not-rocks started writhing in a mass of tentacles to get out of the way of the pulses, though they seemed very angry.

"...Is it working?" asked Mizuki. He then reconsidered his words. "Uh, are they moving towards us??"

Sanada frowned. He guessed he should have known that the creatures would pick the shortest route to flee from the pulses and that it could bring them toward them instead of away. Well... He pulled out a second elctro pulse and tossed it between them and the other one. Hopefully this would force the rock things to go away from them instead of toward them. "I have two more... well two and a half." The half was because it was a prototype of an invention and he wasn't sure he wanted to break it out in front of the safety inspector. It was one of those ideas that Niou and him came up with while sleep deprived and brainstorming for expedition preparations. He wasn't sure who had the original idea to amp up the power and then to add fold-out antennas to create small lightning bolts but he had a feeling that part had been him.

"...and a half?" Mizuki pondered. More importantly, two didn't sound like very much! What if they encountered more? "Let's detour before we get stuck here in the storm. Unless... there's more of them around? We'd better keep checking the heat signatures as we progress."

"And a half," Sanada said again. He watched as the rock things stopped coming toward them and moved away though he didn't know if they would circle around or just continue doing whatever tentacled rocks did when not interrupted by humans. "Our choices are head back to the shuttle and hope we get there before the storm comes or try to take shelter and hope these guys are the worst we run into." Because at least the pulses seemed to be working to deter these guys. But he wasn't sure if it would work on anything bigger or meaner.
