Who: Byodoin and Yanagi
When: After Renji's return to base.
Where: Renji’s room.
What: Paperwork

Byodoin had a problem. A massive, paperwork pile of a problem. What a pain in the ass, really. It was the kind of thing he'd have to go over with a lawyer, if he had a lawyer here to go over things with.

In absence of one he'd have to go for the next best thing. The base’s resident paperwork master.

He knocked on Yanagi Renji's door, ready to ask a massive favor.

Peacefully resting and recovering from the stress of 1) Inui 2) Inui and Akutagawa 3) slime blobs and 4) Inui, Yanagi had not been expecting the knock on his door. It was unlikely to be Sanada, who was currently on duty. Getting up and neatening his yukata, he opened the door, which revealed Byodoin.

“Sir,” Yanagi greeted. “How may I help you?” This appeared to be a business visit.

"Sorry to disturb you while you're recuperating, I just had no real idea where else to go." Byodoin was polite enough to apologize as he held up the stack of paperwork. "I have some paperwork to fill out in regards to my kid, and figured it might be best to ask someone who might actually understand the legal jargon for help before I sign it."

He held up the box of tea in his other hand. "I brought a bribe."

Ah. Yanagi would have thought Byodoin would have come during office hours, but perhaps his data was off, or the problem was more pressing than estimated.

“Of course,” he agreed. “Please come in. The red tape surrounding dependents is indeed particularly troublesome.” He made some room at his desk and offered Byodoin a seat while he went to boil some water for the tea in his electric kettle.

Byodoin took the seat politely enough, setting his papers down on the desk. "I apologize for bothering you when you're probably resting. I just want to make sure that woman isn't trying to screw me over."

If the mother of his child was trying to pull something like that he'd no doubt lose without assistance. She was a formidable lawyer. How inconvenient.

“It’s an understandably distressing matter,” said Yanagi, not about to say it was fine, because it wasn’t all that fine to comb through legalese on a day off, bribe or not. The kettle gave an electronic ping as the water reached boiling, and he took it off the stove, using the hot water to rinse and heat his teaware.

“Is there something in particular you are concerned about?”

"I just want to be sure the arrangement is favorable to me. The woman seems annoyed that I'm seeking joint custody over leaving everything to her." Byodoin would have actually felt bad for bothering Renji, were he a nicer man. But... he really couldn't be assed to. It was Renji's fault for being too polite to say no. "She sent a colorful letter telling me what a pain in the ass I am."

As if Yanagi could refuse a request from a superior officer. He took the teapot and teacups and started to brew the tea that Byodoin had brought. “Could you briefly run through how you found out about your son, sir?” Yanagi asked, starting to look through some of the papers. “Perhaps a case could be made for wilful non-disclosure.”

Byodoin frowned. They probably did have a case for it, huh? "Well, it's a long story, but she swore the kid was her husband's when it was born, going so far as to assure me she'd verified it... but I guess when her husband found out she was a cheating bitch he ran his own tests... next thing you know I'm being contacted for child support."

Served that woman right, honestly. He was still rather salty about being a side piece in the first place. He had ended things on... Well, not so great terms when he found out.

“I see.” Yanagi typed notes into his communicator with one hand while pouring them tea with the other. He offered Byodoin the first cup.

“I am assuming the lady is no longer married?” he asked. He dug around in a drawer for a pencil and pulled Shishido’s desk chair over, sitting down by the desk to go through the documents in more detail. “Suing her might give you enough time for a legal representative to look these through in detail and get a more favorable settlement. While I’ll certainly try my best, I am not an expert.”

Byodoin accepted the tea thoughtfully, mulling over Yanagi's words.

"That's an idea... make that woman sweat a little, too. Or at least give her more work to do." Byodoin was still quite bitter about being denied access to his kid for the first three years of it's life. "Drawing things out with the communications delay sounds like a bit of a pain though."

“It might be exactly what is needed,” explained Yanagi, busily circling questionable statements with his pencil. “From your description, she seems impatient and determined to get her way. Some frustration might force a mistake you could exploit. Currently, you are disadvantaged in almost all aspects, and despite your rank within the UEA, the courts may not look favorably upon you.”

tByodoin sighed and nodded his head in agreement. "I was worried that was the case. Damn woman, just can't make anything easy."

Well, she HAD given him one easier option, but no way in hell was he going to marry a cheating bitch 'for the stability of the child'.

Byodoin finished off his cup of tea with a sigh. "Stay away from lawyers. They're all morally corrupt." He warned Yanagi solemnly.

“I’ve known one or two,” Yanagi replied, amused. He poured Byodoin another cup and started sipping on his own, the preliminary scan through the documents done. “Do you have a proxy in the vicinity of the child who could help?”

"My sister and my friend Watanabe Duke both have power of attorney in my absence. I'll write to them to get the ball rolling on this." Byodoin sighed. What a fucking pain. "Well, thanks for confirming my suspicions for me. I knew if anyone on base could understand legalese it would be you."

“You’re welcome, sir,” said Yanagi amiably, more or less pacified by having gained some new (if not immediately useful) data. “With the POA your sister and friend should be able to speed things along, assuming you want to speed things along. I do think suing is a good idea.” He gathered up Byodoin’s documents into a neat pile and handed them back to him. “I will also forward you some of my legal contacts.”

Byodoin took his paper back with a nod, standing to take his leave now that the matter he'd come for had been addressed. "Next time we meet let's have it be for a more enjoyable activity. Maybe a game of shogi." Byodoin suggested. "Bothering you with legal paperwork is hardly how to stay on your good side."

He walked to the door, nodding his head before heading out.

“Of course, sir. I look forward to a good game.” Yanagi walked Byodoin to the door. “Have a good day, and congratulations.”
