Semi-open log for the second expedition, Team 1 (Yanagi-Inui-Akutagawa-Ibu) and Team 2 (Ryuuzaki-Tezuka-Akutsu-Shishido)

How this works: only characters involved in this event can tag in this log.

Pre-Expedition Events (Open until everyone gets tired of it): Training and Packing. These events will involve only training/supply personnel (e.g. Medical for First Aid, Engineering for equipment, Logistics for requisitions, Tachibana for rations etc) and the personnel going on the mission. This will also include everyone hopping on the shuttle to get to the outpost (total 8 expedition folks + one NPC pilot)

Expedition: (Open until everyone gets tired of it): Set up categories/threads as needed, for example :Camping, Digging, More Digging. Other characters can also tag eg if someone makes a comm call, but make sure you ask/inform that person first, and this should not take up significant portions of the log. As always, ask in the Discord if you have any questions.

There maaaay be an event halfway through the expedition :D
Have fun!

As the final part of his preparations, Yanagi had to see one last person. He'd much rather be saying goodbye to Sanada and Niou, but it was increasingly likely they'd caught some kind of infectious disease, and Yanagi had no wish to start getting sick halfway through the mission.

He walked to Marui and Kirihara's room, and knocked on the door.

"Mr. Marui, it's Yanagi," he said.

Marui was used to getting visitors, but Yanagi was the last person he expected at his door. He half considered pretending he wasn't there, but this was Yanagi, and he'd probably double checked the cameras before he'd come. Ugh.

Not exactly thrilled, Marui went to the door and opened it. "Yanagi, funny seeing you here. What's up?" Hopefully something short and sweet so Marui wouldn't have to fake being pleasant longer than necessary.

Yanagi smiled blandly.

"I am pleased to see you have recovered from your ordeal, Mr. Marui," he said. "I have a task for you. May I come in?"

"Can we talk about it here?" The last thing Marui wanted was this guy in his room. He had nothing to hide, but he still made him feel uneasy.

"If you like," Yanagi agreed readily enough. He didn't much care either way, and was amusedly aware of Marui's wariness, but he still found Marui's actions somewhat impolite. Another strike against Marui in Yanagi's books.

"It is a simple thing - please call your patron at least once a day throughout the mission. Five minutes each would be sufficient, though you should vary the timing."

In case Marui was truly damaged beyond repair by the concussion, he added, "By patron, I mean Mr. Akutagawa, of course."

Of course he knew who Yanagi meant, and his eye twitched at Yanagi explaining it to him like he was stupid. Self-preservation kept him from saying anything about it, however.

"So you're using me to keep Jirou awake. I'll do it, but you guys have to take care of him too. Don't go letting him die, okay?" He liked Jirou, and he wanted him to stick around.

"I'm glad you understand," said Yanagi agreeably. "I will do my best to ensure his safety. There is no 100% when it comes to fieldwork, of course, but Mr. Akutagawa is a valuable asset we will protect."

As compared to certain other people.

Marui nodded. Yanagi’s promise to take care of Jirou made him feel a lot better; at least one of the nerds had some sense.

"Cool. So... Anything else?" As lovely and reassuring as this conversation had been, Marui was still keen to end it.

"That is all," Yanagi said with a nod, not expecting much else of Marui. "Thank you for your cooperation."

"No problem. ...I'm gonna, uh," Marui gestured over his shoulder with his thumb, indicating that he wanted to escape back to his room but wasn't entirely sure he was allowed.

"Please, carry on," said Yanagi, amused. "I'll take my leave." He gave another nod to Marui, then walked off in the direction of the elevators. He had other things to do.

And so it began.

Once they were far out enough from the outpost that the tunnels were no longer lit, Yanagi clicked on his torch and looked at Inui.

"Well, what now, Sadaharu?" Ideally, he or Inui would take point. Akutagawa might be best served safely in the centre, operating the drone to scout ahead, while Ibu and the other one of them brought up the rear. For better or worse, Inui was the rank officer on this mission, so they'd have to see what he thought, though Yanagi did not think it would be too different from his ideas.

Inui turned on his torch as well, though the filters built into their helmets were doing quite a good job of seeing in the dark. He glanced between the other three members of their team and settled on Yanagi. "The formation that you are likely thinking of will work well." With how logically and carefully Yanagi often played his games, it was not difficult to predict what he would be thinking right now.

"Akutagawa in the centre with the drone scouting ahead. Ibu and Renji in the back. I will lead and operate the scanner to detect possible crawler nests, Renji ensure that you are collecting the data for the mapping," he elaborated, for the other two and then glanced at Yanagi to confirm. "Any questions, concerns, comments?"

"I am agreeable," said Yanagi, acknowledging the assignment with a nod. He calibrated his communicator and other devices for the task, then shifted to the back of the group. "Shinji-san and I will have your backs, Sadaharu, Mr. Akutagawa."

Jirou nodded, fiddling with his drone a bit before making it take off and go a ways ahead of him. It was certainly a good way to see what was coming, if nothing else. "Any particular way you want me to head?"

Inui observed the drone for a few moments - stable enough in its operation and he would predict that Akutagawa would become even more competent as the expedition continued. "We shall continue along this path, and attempt to swing north as soon as possible. Early data from the tunnels at the mining outpost suggest there may be some correlation between the magnetic field lines of the planet and the crawler movements." He glanced at Renji for a moment before he nodded and started down the tunnel. "It should begin to get muddy within approximately 1.5 km."

Yanagi nodded back at Inui, gave Akutagawa a reassuring glance, and then got to work mapping their route with the data fed back by the drone and other scanners.

They walked in awkward silence for a bit before there was a sudden dip, and the reduced grip on his boots suggested it was, in fact, getting muddy.

"Watch your footing," Yanagi reminded.

So far, nothing on the scanners. The tunnel was definitely getting smaller though and Inui pressed his hands out to roughly measure the difference in cave width from when they started. A 70% decrease so far.

Inui's foot was the first to slip, down a sudden drop in the ground and he caught himself before he went falling. "There is a sudden drop of... appromixately 94 cm," he said, lowering one leg down, before hopping down. He held a hand out to the others to help them down. "Mind your head, Renji."

"Mind yours," Yanagi replied calmly, bending his knees to lower his centre of gravity. He descended without much issue, checking to see if Akutagawa had solid footing.

"Has the drone picked up anything?" he asked.

Driving across the planet to collect rocks wasn't anywhere close enough to what Tezuka wanted to do so close to his birthday. He just wanted to reread the entirety of Bounty Hunter and perhaps get some cuddles from Jirou relax with a book. Maybe tend to Marilyn. But nOoOo, he was out here, covered in dust from head to toe, and said dust was also getting in his eyes as he drove this stupid ATV. At least he made sure everyone was strapped in for this bumpy ride.

Shishido winced as they hit another bump that felt like it was trying to throw them from the ATV. He was almost positive Tezuka wasn't hitting every possible rock ever on purpose. Almost. In an attempt to distract himself, he turned to the person next to him (though speaking loud enough that everyone could hear him), and said, "are we sure this is a mission? Or you think it's actually a punishment?"

Because it definitely felt more like a punishment at this point in time.

"Who says it can't be both?" Akutsu replied, hands behind his head and looking relaxed, somehow. The jostling from the bumpy ride didn't phase him, even if he was reasonably sure it could be a smoother trip, even out here.

"Oy!" he called, trying to get their driver's attention. "Are we there yet?"

Tezuka resisted the urge to roll his eyes – he wasn't deliberately trying to make the ride bumpy, he just wanted to get the team to their destination as quickly as possible.
"We'll be there in thirty minutes," he grumbled. "Either can it or talk about something else."

"It's not like we have a lot in common to talk about," Shishido unhelpfully pointed out. "And somehow I doubt this is the group to enjoy small talk." Shishido didn't mind it personally but that wasn't the vibe he got from the rest of them.

"Aw c'mon, doc. I'm sure we can find somethin to chat about." Like how someone seemed to have woken up in the wrong bed this morning, maybe? But Akutsu kept his mouth shut on that point - antagonizing the team was probably not the wisest thing to do this early in the mission.

"Maybe like why none of us know a damn thing about rocks, but we're gettin sent to look at 'em anyway?"

Oh yay. This wasn't traumatic at all. These blobs were relatively small, but there were a lot of them and when they got together they started merging into one big blob, lovely.

And they were heading right towards them.

Jirou carefully moved himself behind Inui. They could eat him first.

Inui stared at the blobs and then looked around the space they were in. "... this is an unfortunate discovery," he said blandly. "I believe it is best to act under the initial assumption that they are similar to the blob that Dr Oshitari is studying currently that digests sandworms." He turned off his torch (the night vision filter increasing on his helmet) and started to pull it apart. "Largely water based, due to the consistency of their forms... Renji, they should be responsive to electrical input of a high enough current."

Yanagi sighed internally. It was apparently too much to ask for everything to go smoothly.

"On it," he replied, rummaging in his pack for some spare electronics. "Let's try to get the batteries in series to increase voltage. Everyone else, please step away from wet areas." It was a good thing their nanosuit boots were insulated. To some extent.
