Who: Senri & Kenya
When: The day the expedition teams arrive back to base
Where: Senri & Kenya's room
What: Kenya gets reunited with his dear Yuuko-chan. Oh, and his roommate, too. :)
Chitose sat at the desk on his room, finishing up some paperwork on the last patient he'd made a house call to when he felt the now-familiar little claws moving up his back. Once Yuuko reached her usual perch, front claws on his shoulder, Chitose turned his head to smile at her. "Are you excited, Yuuko-chan? Kenya will be back very soon!"
She didn't talk back, of course, but Chitose felt her tail wrap around his middle as she shifted closer, leaning her head against his cheek.
Kenya had made it through decon and was finally able to go back to his room, and more importantly, to his baby! He entered the room, smiling rightly. "Senri! Yuuko! I missed you both so much!"
Clearly the Iguana had missed him, too, because she was scrambling to get off of Senri now.
"Ow ow ow…" Chitose chuckled even as the scrambling claws scratched him, and he got up to wrap Kenya in a hug, with the added bonus of making it easier for Yuuko to shift over to her owner. "I'm so glad you made it back safely, Ken-chan! I heard it was, um. Quite eventful. You're okay, right?"
Kenya hugged back, happy once Yuuko was back on his back. "Our team was pretty okay! Mostly just wind storms! I'm totally okay!" He grinned.
Chitose still couldn't help giving Kenya a quick once-over, to satisfy the doctor in him. But Kenya did indeed look fine. "Good. I don't mind at all to babysit Yuuko-chan, but I definitely am not ready to be a full time iguana owner," he grinned, flopping down onto his own bed. "So, tell me. What was it like?"
Kenya laughed. "Yeah, and she's a chill iguana! Some of them are squirrely." He sat on his own bed, cuddling Yuuko. "It was stressful! I'm so tired! We had to sit in those nanosuits for two weeks and it was so hot and windy. But Yukimura and Mizuki were so nice!!"
Even just the thought of a squirrelly iguana made Chitose tired. He was exceptionally glad that Yuuko was as laid back as she was. "I bet you can't wait to get a really good night's sleep. I can't imagine what it was like out there. But I'm glad you got along with your team. I haven't met Mizuki yet, but Dr. Yukimura has seemed nice every time we've talked."
"Yeah, I can't wait! I missed having a real bed!" Kenya, however, was way too wired to sleep right now. "Mizuki-san is wonderful! He's so kind and smart! He knows everything we need to do to be safe!"
Chitose grinned. Kenya's energy was going to wear him out, but for now, he was glad to have a not-so-silent room again. "Sounds like you made some new friends out there. Hopefully you guys won't drift apart now that you're back."
Kenya sobered up for a little. “I hope not. The more friends the better, right?” He shifted Yuuko into his lap, petting her back. “I know you took on a bunch of stuff while we were gone, right? You weren’t over-worked, were you?”
"Naaah, I'm fine," Chitose answered, giving Kenya two thumbs up. "Well. I admit, it'll be nice to get back to my usual routine, but it's all good. I like to change it up sometimes, between moving at my own laid back pace and then filling my days with all kinds of things to do. Usually it just depends on my mood that day. But I wouldn't have volunteered if I couldn't handle it. Working in the greenhouses was really fun, too. And educational!"
Kenya grinned. “Well I know both Dr. Yukimura and I appreciate your efforts!” He cuddled his iguana. “She looks so good. I know you took good care of her.” He truly adored his iguana. “I guess I’ve got a day of rest and then I’m back to work.” He sighed. “...I know Atobe is probably not happy with me…”
"I'm glad. She was fun! Though a little difficult to understand at first. But we got along well soon enough." And Chitose had tried very hard to make sure he took every bit as good of care of her as Kenya himself. "Did something happen between you and Atobe?"
Kenya fidgeted. “Well, you remember that whole skirt thing when I first arrived? I may have…filed a complaint and that is part of the reason he has to do sensitivity training now…” Kenya sort of felt bad that there had been an actual punishment, but he had felt really uncomfortable with the whole skirt thing.
Ahhh yes. That's right. "Well…considering the way he aired people's medical stuff on a completely unscreened journal post, I can't say he didn't deserve it. One of the major things with being a doctor is doctor-patient confidentiality, which he very definitely violated. He needs it." Chitose shrugged. "He really only has himself to blame. I'm glad you filed that complaint."
Kenya nodded. “I know, but he’s supposed to be my mentor, and now things might be weird…” He took a deep breath and shook his head. “I just have to be positive! I’m sure it will all work out!” He smiled. “Anything interesting happen while we were gone?”
"Well, you never know. Things might work out for the better, somehow." If it got too bad, Chitose was sure there had to be some kind of contingency that would let Kenya apprentice under someone else. "Mmm…Not really. I mean, medbay's been out for the count thanks to Kin-chan, but the engineers have been working really hard. I think they're almost done, if they aren't already. I made a few house calls in the meantime… Oh. We got a couple of new people, too, though I haven't met them yet myself. And a big shipment of meat and other things. Kippei made a ton of desserts for everyone!"
Kenya’s mouth dropped. “Meat? Desserts??” He stood up. “When? Did I miss it?” Of course he probably did. He flopped on his bed. Yuuko landing on his chest. “Man…I want something sweet…” He sighed. “Maybe I could find something after I sleep?”
Chitose laughed. "You'll have to reach out to Kippei to see how much of what is left. I'm sure he'd be happy to cook something up for you. Buuuut…" He got up and went over to his desk, unlocking the bottom drawer. Usually, he kept patient files in there if he absolutely had to take something back with him, but this time, he'd stashed a container with a few of Kippei's recently made desserts. "I wasn't exactly sure which you'd like best, so I tried to get a variety." He handed the container to Kenya. "I thought you might be missing real food when I heard about those ration packs they send out with you."
Kenya set Yuuko to the side and took the container. He put it on his desk and hugged Chitose. “You’re the best!!” He cried. Was he actually sobbing? Maybe, he was a weird guy. “You’re the best friend a guy could have!” So maybe Kenya was feeling weird due to the lack of decent food. He let go and sat on the bed, digging into his variety of desserts.
Chitose grinned, sitting back down on his bed and being glad he'd thought to keep a few aside for Kenya before those desserts had disappeared. They really hadn't lasted very long. Too many people in search of non-algae-tasting food. "Kippei's gotten really good at making things. I was really surprised by the variety he'd whipped up."
Kenya stopped, mid-bite. "Oh, yeah, Dr. Tachibana was your childhood friend. You were pretty worried when we were on our way over… but things are good now?" He had been so busy with work, he had lost track of the Tachibana situation.
"Mhm. I don't think they'll ever be exactly the same as they used to be, but we've talked things out and cleared up some misunderstandings, so we're good." Chitose could admit to himself that sometimes he missed the way things used to be, but nothing stayed the same forever. It couldn't be helped. "I'm really proud of all he's accomplished," he beamed.
Kenya tilted his head, trying to read Chitose’s expression. "Was he your boyfriend?"
Welp, now Chitose was embarrassed, but he tried to keep it from showing too much. "That's…kind of one of the misunderstandings. Seems like we both wanted to be? But never had a proper talk about it until it was too late," he shrugged. "But he's got someone he likes, now, and I'd never dream of trying to disrupt that. Kippei deserves all the happiness in the world."
Kenya set his half-eaten dessert to the side and went to sit with Chitose. "And how are you doing? You're okay?"
"Pfft. I'm fine. At the time, I never thought he was into me like that. And now, there's no use worrying about it. The past won't change." Senri shifted to lie down on his bed, hands under his head and long legs draped over Kenya's lap. "What about you and Marui? What's that about?"
Kenya shook his head. "You still seem like you like him a lot." He draped himself on top of Chitose’s legs, since they were apparently being all touchy-feely. "Me and Bunta? We're just having fun!"
"Of course I like him a lot! He's my best friend. Always." There wasn't anything strong enough to convince Chitose otherwise. "Fun, huh? No feelings involved? Or is it like the whole 'friends with benefits' thing?"
Kenya nodded, grinning. "Yeah. We're not boyfriends! Friends with benefits sounds right." Kenya rocked his head a little. "I haven't found anyone who wants to be my boyfriend."
Chitose had never quite understood the friends with benefits thing, but hey. Whatever worked. "Are you looking for someone? It's going to be a pretty limited selection out here for the next five years."
Kenya laughed. "Probably not! I'm apparently a lot of fun, but…" He shook his head. "I have so much work to do! And I'm such a spaz, I trip over my tongue around people I like!"
Chitose smiled and sat up enough to reach over and ruffle Kenya's hair. "Anybody worth keeping won't mind. In fact, they'll probably even like that about you. So just be yourself. Let destiny do the rest."
"Yeah, you're right…" Kenya nodded, closing his eyes. He was starting to crash, now that his body was relaxing. Yuuko seemed to sense it because she climbed off Kenya’s bed and onto Chitose’s, climbing on her owner's back.
Chitose chuckled at Kenya's sudden sleepiness and shifted, tugging Kenya down to lie next to him. "Go ahead and sleep, Ken-chan. I'll just make sure you're up in time for your first work shift back."
Kenya laughed, totally up for cuddling. "But we were having a conversation… I don't want to be rude…" Still, now both Senri and Yuuko were cuddled with him. "Maybe just ten minutes…"
"Oh please. You're tired already, and I'm the one telling you to sleep. How is doing what I tell you rude?" Chitose was pretty sure Kenya didn't have a rude bone in his body. "Sleeeeep. Or I'll get out the lavender oil."
Kenya closed his eyes again, snuggling. Suddenly, all the exertion of the last two weeks sapping the energy out of him. "Thanks Senri…" He mumbled as he started to drift off.
"Any time, Ken-chan," Chitose smiled, wrapping an arm around Kenya as the other drifted to sleep. If Kenya really wanted to continue their conversation, they could do it later. For now…Chitose was actually a bit tired himself, from all the extra work he'd taken on, so he closed his eyes and let himself doze as well.
