Who: Tachibana and Kin

It was the night before the expedition groups were sent out. Tachibana was a nervous wreck. He honestly felt like he was more nervous this time compared to when he was sent out. Kin-chan would be gone for 2 weeks. He was sure Kin-chan had the right training, but he didn’t know if the group he was with would give him the proper patience.

He had made Kin-chan some late night “takoyaki” and some cake, taking it to the room. He was going to do whatever Kin-chan wanted to do tonight.

Kin-chan was bouncing around the room impatiently. He was EXCITED because he was going OUT for two weeks but he couldn't go run and lift weights and climb walls because he got told he had to have a good sleep. And he was just impatient to get into his nanosuit and go do expedition.

He hung on the pull up bar and swung back and forth when suddenly the door opened. "Tachibana Tachibana!!" He cheered, dropping down to scuttle closer and hug him around the middle. "Hallo you are back late tonight!"

Tachibana held the food up so it didn’t get knocked out of his hands. “Hey, Buddy. Getting ready for bed?” He asked. “I made you a snack.” He was going to miss Kin-chan always being so excited to see him.

"YES!!! I have already SHOWERED SUPER GOOD!!" Because he knew he'd be without that for two weeks. "And see, I have to go to bed early." He pulled away though, eyes wide up at the food and was that takoyaki?! "I wanna eat first though!!"

Tachibana nodded. “We’ll still go to bed early, but let’s eat first.” He set the food down on Kin-chan’s desk. “Consider it our own little going away party.” It made Tachibana sad to even say it. “Do you like chocolate cake?”

Kin-chan's eyes widened even more seeing the CAKE on his desk. "YES!!! Yes I do!! Thank you thank you Tachibana!" He hugged again."Hang on I will get YOUR CHAIR!!" And he hurried to the other side of the room go get Tachibana's desk chair and carry it over.

Tachibana laughed and sat down once the chair was put down in front of him. “Thank you, Kin-chan.” He smiled. He had pre-sliced the cake, just in case. “I just thought you should have a fun meal before you go. I made you some snacks that should last, but otherwise, you’ll just have the meals they send you with.”

Kin-chan climbed up onto his chair and stared wide eyed at the food Tachibana had MADE FOR HIM. "I don't mind the MISSION FOOD." he told Tachibana. "I have eaten LOTS OF IT before!!" He grinned and grabbed the first ball of takoyaki to eat it with a happy wriggle on his chair. "Your food is SO MUCH better though."

“Yeah, you’re tougher than I am, Kin-chan. The mission food kept making me sad.” Tachibana sighed dramatically. “I’m glad you like my food better, though.” He hoped that soon, he would at least have some frozen octopus to make real takoyaki. “You seem excited for the mission.”

"It is OK, it just tastes the same always," Kin said with a big sigh. And after a few days it just got very dull. "Your food is always different!" He ate another takoyaki. "I AM EXCITED!!! I love going on missions!!" They were always fun. "And I get to DIG. And PUNCH ROCKS to make them SHATTER."

Tachibana wished he could be surprised, but nothing with Kin-chan surprised him anymore. “I’m sure you’re going to do a great job.” And he was sure Kin would. At least with the actual mission stuff. “Just promise me you’ll listen to your team, okay?”

Kin nodded furiously. "Yes yes!!! 'Cause Byodoin said I can get a SECOND VISIT FROM SANTA if I'm super good!! And I gotta talk to BYODOIN everyday so he can update Santa okay?? And then he said you would talk to me everyday too!!! Right??" He pointed at his cards (helpfully grouped as Can Wrestle and Cant Wrestle. Both Marui and Kikumaru were in the no wrestling group). "And I know! Can't wrestle them, only wrestle the rocks and sandworms."

“Of course I’ll talk to you everyday.” Tachibana said, smiling fondly. He looked at the cards. “Good job remembering. I’m sure you’ll have plenty of rocks to fight.” He laughed. “You’re going to have a great second Christmas when you get back.”

"Everyday?? Maybe before you sleep? To make sure you are RUNNING 'cause otherwise you will get too slow, Tachibana." Kin looked hopefully at him. He grinned and yes, he was DEFINITELY going to behave so much and get a second Christmas and a visit from Santa. "I wanna take a PHOTO with you and Byodoin to send to my mum when I get back?? And with Santa!! Is that OK??"

“We can schedule our call for that time every night.” Tachibana agreed. “I promise I won’t skip my run.” He honestly was worried it helped him sleep at night as well. “A photo? Yeah, we can do that. Your mum will be so proud.” He didn’t actually know Kin-chan’s mom, but he was sure she knew what was going on?

"Okay!!! So I will get FOURTEEN calls from you!! You could run twice the distance, Tachibana! For me too!!" Excellent plans yes. Kin inhaled another ball of takoyaki. "She sent me A LETTER last time I showed you right???"

“Twice the distance…? Can I break it up so I don’t die?” Tachibana laughed. At the mention of the letter, he shook his head. “No, you didn’t. Was it a nice letter?”

"Yes!!! One morning and one night?? But I bet you could run both nonstop Tachibana!!" Kin beamed and took his communicator off his wrist, opening up his saved letter from his mother to proudly show Tachibana. "Yes!! She is doing VERY GOOD!!"

“Thanks for the vote of confidence, Buddy.” Tachibana laughed, turning his attention to the letter. It was a very nice letter, and she seemed genuinely fond of her son. “She sounds like a very nice woman, Kin-chan.” He would be happy to take a photo for Kin-chan to send so she knew he was okay.

"Maybe not very quickly though, 'cause you're still slow," Kin added on. He beamed at the compliments to his mum because yes yes, she was definitely the best, nice person. "Yah!! I wanna go visit her when I'm done here!! And go eat FESTIVAL FOOD together!!" Like the takoyaki in front of him, but real ones and he ate another ball.

“Yep, I’ll never be as fast as you.” Tachibana said to amuse his shorter friend. “Maybe we should try to have a small one here before then.” He started pondering it. “I’m sure Marui-san would be up for it.” The problem would be with getting it cleared. “But I bet your mom will be thrilled to go with you when you leave here.”

Oohhhh. "YES YES!!! Maybe do some GAMES TOO!!" 'Cause he wasn't very good at them but his mum had been a decent contender. Kin grinned at Tachibana again and tugged at his arm. "Hay hay Tachibana you can use my bar when I'm not here okay?? 'Cause it might rust if it's not used."

“Games would be pretty fun.” Tachibana said. He looked at the bar. “Oh, yeah, sure. I’ll do some pull-up reps everyday.” Seriously, Kin-chan, Tachibana was going to miss you. “Is there anything else you want to make sure I do while you’re gone?”

Kin looked very serious as he thought about all his regular chores on the base. Security things, Tachibana definitely couldn't do because he wasn't super important secret security… "hug Byodoin everyday okay?? 'Cause he might be lonely too. And use all the treadmills, don't just stick to your favourite one!!"

Tachibana’s mind went blank for a little on that one. “...Okay. I’ll try.” He wasn’t sure Byodoin would go for that, but he could attempt it. “And I promise to use a different treadmill each night. Even the burnt one.”

"You are very helpful, thank you thank you." Kin shifted off his chair to hug Tachibana again, cuddling up. But he didn't try and climb up because Tachibana was still a CIVILIAN and a bit more breakable. "Can I have some CAKE now??"

Tachibana nodded and grabbed a slice of cake for Kin-chan. "You can have some now and some for breakfast if you want." God, why did he feel like a mother sending her kid to summer camp?

Cake for BREAKFAST!! what a TREAT!! Kin gazed wide eyed at Tachibana and nodded. "Yes please!!! And I won't tell anyone okay??" He pulled away to hop back up into his chair, reaching for the slice of cake. "MAYBE I could get a cake for Christmas?" He asked hopefully, taking a bite of the offered slice and omg it was so good. "MAYBE when I get back??"

A traditional Christmas cake would be fun to make, although he might have to consult Marui on decorating. Hensimply could not deny Kin-chan. "Of course. You can't have Christmas without cake."

The one slice of cake did not last long as Kin decimated it very happily. "BUT only if I behave okay??" Kin said very seriously. Which he would. 100% behave because he was very good at this. "I will get Marui to tell you, 'cause he is very trustworthy."

Tachibana smiled. "I think you’re trustworthy, too, Kin-chan. I know you wouldn't lie to me." Still, if it made Kin feel better, he would ask Marui as well.

Kin looked momentarily worried and fretted, eating the last of his cake slice. "I lied to you once though, Tachibana," he said guiltily. "BUT NOT BADLY maybe…"

Tachibana tilted his head. "We all make mistakes, but I think you wouldn't lie about something so important, right?"

Kin shook his head and dropped his voice as he leaned in closely to Tachibana to whisper. "I'm not REALLY 30. But it's a secret okay, Tachibana???"

Tachibana blinked. Somehow, he suspected, but he didn't expect to be told. "How old are you, then?" Tachibana whispered back.

"idunno." Kin kept whispering, feeling a little bit guilty. "But I was 10! When I met Byodoin and he was in his twenties I think??? And now he's THIRTY SEVEN…" He'd done the numbers very seriously, counting on his fingers when he'd been alone and it didn't make sense. "But I got all my birthdays!! So i don't know…"

Tachibana frowned and patted Kin-chan's head. "It's okay. You just told me what the adults told you. That doesn't count as lying." He smiled softly. "No worries, okay?" So Kin was probably closer to 20. It didn't matter much now.

Kin looked absolutely relieved as Tachibana forgave the lie and hugged him again. "Don't tell Byodoin though okay?? 'Cause he thinks I'm 30 and I don't wanna tell him. It's a secret!!"

Tachibana hugged back, nodding. He thought if he did bring it up, be might be murdered. "It's a secret, I promise."

Kin snuggled into the hug. Tachibana was so good to him, keeping secrets and making him tasty food. "I'm gonna miss you lots when I'm away, Tachibana," he said sadly. "Don't get too lonely without me okay?"

"I'm gonna miss you, too, Kin-chan." Tachibana said softly. "But we'll talk everyday, and when you get back, Santa will come." He was perfectly fine with the snuggles. "Are you getting tired?"

"You can talk to LOTS OF PEOPLE if you get lonely!!" Kin had LOTS OF FRIENDS who were still on base, they could help keep Tachibana company. He nodded at the question. He hadn't gone for a run that night, but he'd done a big workout that day and maybe all the excitement was finally getting to him and making him tired. "Yeah I gotta have a good sleep tonight!"

"Yeah, I’ll have to do that." Tachibana said before gathering up the dishes and stacking them. He stepped out for a moment to pass them off to a cleaning bot before coming back into the room. "Okay, go brush your teeth and we'll get to bed."

Kin detached himself from Tachibana and ohhh, Tachibana was so good cleaning up. "OKAY!! I will go!!" And he scuttled off to the bathroom to brush his teeth - carefully, for two minutes - and go through his nighttime routine.

And Kin returned to the room. "Tachibana! You gotta clean your teeth too, or else they will ROT and fall out of your mouth onto the floor. I will do handstands until you do okay?"

"Just be careful." Tachibana instructed before going to brush his teeth and throw on his pyjamas. He came back in to see Kin still in handstand. "Did that one last the whole 2 minutes?"

Kin nodded (and he was ALWAYS careful anyway) and went up into a handstand the moment Tachibana left. And he did a couple of pushups while he was there too, hindered only by his pyjama shirt falling down onto his face and blinding him.

He nearly fell over in surprise as Tachibana's voice was suddenly THERE again. "HALLO Tachibana!!" Kin said, and nope, there was no seeing at all. He finally dropped down and bounced back up to his feet. "Yes!! I held it the WHOLE TIME!"

"Great job!" Tachibana grinned. Once Kin was standing back up, he helped straighten out his clothes. "Alright, Buddy, we should get to sleep, huh?"

Yes. He had to sleep early to be SUPER PREPARED. "Yes yes. 'Cause I can have CAKE for breakfast you said!" Kin hopped into bed and snuggled under the blankets. And then paused, peeking over at Tachibana. "Tachibana…"

Tachibana was about to climb in his own bed when Kin said his name. "Yeah, Kin-chan? What's up?"

Kin looked so guilty because oh no he hadn't asked for this for years but he was suddenly hit with the realisation that he was going to be away for two weeks. "... Can you sleep with me please?" he asked, shifting to the wall so Tachibana could see that there was definitely enough room for him in the bed.

Okay, so now Tachibana’s heart was breaking. He smiled softly and went to climb in bed with Kin-chan. "Alright, Kin-chan, get comfy."

Kin beamed as Tachibana joined him in bed and he wriggled closer to wrap himself around Tachibana in the tightest hug with arms and legs. "I wanna have a BIG DINNER when I get back okay??? And sleep like this again with you and go RUNNING. Okay??"

Tachibana wrapped his arms around Kin-chan, nodding. "Yeah, we'll have a big dinner, we'll pick up our running, and we can sleep like this again." It was really cute. Kin-chan sometimes seemed in his own world, but it was nice for Tachibana to know he was a part of it. "Anytime you want to sleep like this, you just have to let me know."

OOHHH this was very nice, being hugged back. "Okay okay I will tell you, definitely. 100%" Kin wriggled a bit more to make sure he was definitely comfortable wrapped around Tachibana before he shut his eyes. "Goodnight Tachibana. I will see you in the morning? And we can eat together before I go." And like he'd been trained, Kin was already drifting off.

"Whatever you want." Tachibana whispered, rubbing Kin-chan's back as the smaller man fell asleep. If Tachibana spent most of the night fretting about Kin-chan. He didn't let it show in the morning.
