Who: Byodoin and Ohtori
What: Worm Hunting practice!
When: Before the expedition.
Where: Outside the base.
Byodoin wasn't really one for liking people. In fact, he tried to avoid it when possible. Unfortunately there were a few people that just wasn't possible with, and one such person happened to be his damn roommate.
The man was nice. Too nice to be annoyed by. And so Byodoin had to resign himself to not hating the man, which was a pain in his ass because when you liked people you also worried about them going on stupid missions and getting themselves killed.
There was only one way to handle this.
"Hey, kid, get your gear on. I'm going to teach you to kill worms properly." Byodoin demanded as he entered the room.
Ohtori looked up from his tablet, where he'd been reading about almost exactly that. Researching the worms - what was known about them, anyway, which wasn't as much as he would've liked - was part of how he was prepping for the mission, since there wasn't a whole lot else he could do besides working out and target practice.
"There's a proper way?" he asked, a little less of his usual lightness in his voice. He was in mission mode, and just like when he'd been in the military, it changed him a bit. "Good." Ohtori put the tablet down and did exactly as his roommate ordered, putting on all the necessary gear. "Learning from you is bound to be better than reading about it, anyway."
Yet more things to like about Ohtori. He wasn't a wimp, and was willing to work hard for his safety. Ugh, it was annoying. Life was way easier when you didn't like people.
"Yes there is a proper way. You have to aim for their open mouths. Helps you hit their vitals." Byodoin replied, grabbing his own environmental suit. "I'm going to take you out and show you how it's done."
Oh. Yes. Open mouths. Well, good thing that's completely easy to do considering how much they like to try to eat people. "At least it's a large target," Ohtori remarked with a shrug. "Better than having to have pinpoint accuracy." He was capable with a weapon, but he was no sniper. And trying to hit a moving target, especially ones as surprisingly fast as the sandworms reportedly were, was always more difficult. Having to do both would require someone more skilled.
"How many have you taken down, Byodoin-san?"
Byodoin had to agree, he preferred a larger target. Made the whole job easier.
"I've taken down quite a few now. It's better not to have too many around the base." Plus practicing on living targets kept him sharp. He headed for the transport bay. "After today you'll be a pro at it too. Able to protect your whole team."
Ohtori followed along, looking forward to the practice. Sure, he'd done a few rounds of the virtual version to get his feet wet with it, but knowing it was virtual kind of took away that pressure to do it absolutely right.
"That's what I want. To be able to protect them." Sure, Sanada was military, but he was also the team engineer. There were chances that their equipment would fail or break, and Sanada would have to be busy fixing that, solely because he was the only one of the three of them who could. Tachibana was a civilian, with only the weapons training required to get to Izanagi in the first place. Which, in a way, left Ohtori as the closest thing they had to full-time security, and Ohtori took that thought very seriously. "I will do everything I can to make sure we all get back safely."
Byodoin nodded his head, pleased with Ohtori's attitude. Yeah, the guy would be just fine.
He led them right on up to a transport already loaded up with guns. "Get on. I'll take care of th3 driving."
Ohtori climbed into the transport, eyeing the supply of weapons. They were well stocked, and with a good variety. Clearly prepared for just such events.
"Is it weird that I'm kind of looking forward to this?" Ohtori asked, once they were both settled and the doors were opening to let them out.
"Nah, this is pretty fun, actually." Byodoin smirked at Ohtori. "And it's the rare chance to get off base... though you'll probably have enough of that in the next few weeks."
Byodoin pulled them out of the hangar and started towards the pile of sandworm carcasses he'd selected for this particular mission.
Ohtori chuckled. Somehow, he had the feeling Byodoin was right. Tachibana was fine, but he had no real idea how he'd get along with Sanada. Hopefully well, but then…who really knew? "Two weeks does seem like a long time. But given the destination in the mission specs, we'll probably need it."
As the…pile of dead sandworms…came into view, Ohtori's eyes widened. Some of them looked like they'd...quite literally been torn apart. "...Tooyama-san's handiwork, I assume?" Maybe the sandworms weren't the biggest threat on Izanagi…
Byodoin pulled up near the pile and parked the vehicle, looking around for any shifting sand before hopping out and grabbing a couple of the laser rifles.
"The brat is more of a monster than the worms, honestly... hopefully he cleared out enough that we don't have any live ones until later in your training." Byodoin offered one of the guns to Choutarou.
Ohtori stepped out also and took the rifle, going through the usual checks to make sure it was in correct working order. Not that he had any reason to think it wasn't, but the military had taught him it was always better to not leave things like that to chance. "I'm not sure how you handle him. What I've seen…he really does seem like some kind of wild animal."
"Aw, and here I thought we'd just walk right into it," he smirked behind his helmet, letting some of the teasing into his voice.
"He takes some getting used to, but he's not a bad kid." Byodoin replied with a smirk, pointing his gun at the pile of worms and firing a practice round.
The worms jiggled as some decomposing gas escaped from the hole.
"Fire a couple rounds as practice if you want and then I'll set up a few targets for us. A live one is bound to show eventually."
Ohtori went ahead and set unofficial targets in his mind, firing off rounds at very specific points or small pieces of worm, partly to make sure the weapon was calibrated properly, but partly for the practice. He hadn't fired a live weapon in a while, and it confirmed what he'd been pretty sure of even before this. The VR version the base had really wasn't the same. The weapon felt different, even just to hold. There was a bit of recoil with this, not the VR version…
When he felt sure he was ready, he gave Byodoin a nod. "I'm ready when you are."
Byodoin went to set up the motorized, moving targets for practice.
"They're all roughly the size of a sandworm's mouth. Just try to center your shots the best you can. Try a few different guns too." He instructed very matter of factly, scanning the sand again for signs of incoming worms.
Ohtori closed his eyes and took a deep breath, focusing himself a little…and when he opened his eyes, he let loose a few rounds of fire, testing to see where he was at. Each shot had him reevaluating, shifting how high or how low, how far left or right, and he did get closer with each shot.
Since it wasn't a live worm, he let himself take the time to do as Byodoin had suggested, and try a few of the different weapons. Most were okay, and could get the job done, but when he spotted one that was the same make and model of his old faithful from the military days, he went straight for it. The familiar size, weight, and shape of it in his hand brought back memories - not all of them pleasant - but of all the weapons he'd used back then, this was the one he'd never had problems with.
Hoping that this one was as reliable as the one he knew, he stepped back towards the targets. After a few test shots that were almost dead center, he grinned to himself. Oh yeah. This one.
Byodoin watched with amusement as Ohtori went through the guns, and that look on Choutarou's face when he found his preferred rifle...
"Yeah, you were definitely a soldier before."
He glanced back out into the sand, honing in on a moving spot and smirking. "Looks like there's a live one incoming. Ready to take it down?"
Ohtori chuckled. "I wasn't a Sub-Lieutenant for nothing, you know," he teased. He knew people underestimated him, and…well, if he was perfectly honest, he couldn't entirely blame them. He knew he didn't exactly have a typical military personality. But. That was a matter for another time.
He could feel the vibrations under the ground getting stronger, and, following his roommate's gaze, he saw the shifting sand as well. Resisting the urge to plant his feet, since an aggressive, moving target needed quick movements, he readied himself, aiming towards the moving sand. Not too precise, not yet, not until he had eyes on the target.
"Bring it on."
Byodoin grabbed a gun of his own, just to be extra safe. Choutarou had never done this, after all. "It will surface... now!"
Sure enough, the worm broke through the sand, weird jaws gaping as it prepared to make Choutarou and Byodoin it's next meal.
Wow. Okay. Bigger and faster in person. Good to know.
Ohtori raised his weapon and lined up a shot. Fired, and while he hit the giant worm, it wasn't where he'd intended. The thing was definitely faster than Byodoin's moving targets. Aiming for where it currently was would be useless…so he'd have to aim for where it was going, instead…
Instincts and adrenaline fully firing meant that all his thinking happened quickly, and his second shot came only a matter of seconds after the first. This one hit its mark - right down the center of the worm's mouth.
The worm thrashed some, before falling to the ground twitching. Byodoin smirked.
"Good shot. I think you'll be able to defend everyone just fine on your mission." He concluded with a nod, going over to shoot the still twitching worm several more times until it stopped. "You don't seem rusty at all."
Ohtori was a little surprised by how quickly that shot took down the worm. It really was a proper way to deal with it, and he was glad he'd let Byodoin show him. Seeing the size and speed of the worm in person, learning a good, quick way to put it down, and getting in some extra target practice that wasn't just the virtual version had been good, and it made him feel better about going out on the mission.
"I still feel rusty. After I left the military I didn't keep up on the practice much…at least not until I decided to come out here. Then I at least tried to make a weekly visit to a shooting range… But three months on a shuttle didn't help any, and getting settled in took priority…" He really hadn't had much practice recently, at least not until the mission and his involvement had been announced. "But maybe it's one of those things they say you never truly forget?"
He walked toward Byodoin and the dead worm, crouching down to get a closer look at it now that it wasn't a threat. "Thank you, Byodoin-san, for bringing me out here and teaching me."
"It's something you don't forget easily, that's for sure." Byodoin agreed with a nod. "Anyway, you ready to head back to base now or should we wait around for one or two more worms?"
Ohtori was actually a little torn. The extra practice couldn't hurt, but he didn't want to take up too much of his roommate's time. If they'd ridden out separately, he'd have suggested Byodoin go back ahead of him while he got some more practice in. …Of course, there was still time before the mission started…
He looked around, checking to see if it looked like there might be another worm nearby, but the sand was still. "I think I'm ready to go back. If I get the itch for more practice, I can come out again another time before the mission starts," he decided.
Byodoin nodded his head in agreement. "Let's head on back then. Getting rest before you leave is important too."
He climbed back into the transport so that they could head back to base, at least a little more secure in Ohtori's ability to survive.
"I already feel like I'll probably fall asleep as soon as I get back to our room," Ohtori chuckled. taking one last look at the recently fallen worm. As he followed Byodoin back into the transport, he reflected on how it was a little weird, that one shot could put down something so large so easily, but he was kind of glad. At least now, if one came after them out there, he wouldn't have to worry about it as much. Even the experience of getting one down had been a big boost to his confidence about how not entirely out of practice he was.
He took one last moment to check and make sure all the weapons they'd used were secure. Satisfied there, he hopped into the passenger seat. "Thanks again, Byodoin-san."
