spacewillow: (i know something you don't)
Who: Yagyuu and Yanagi
What: Yanagi’s psych evaluation.
Where: Yagyuu’s office.
When: After Yagyuu’s post.

Yagyuu was actually looking forward to this evaluation. If it was anything like Inui's, it would go smoothly and quickly. Based on his observations in journals and the communications chat, Yanagi seemed to be a very no nonsense kind of man and highly intelligent with a slight flair for sadism. He appreciated the Command officer already.

“Dr. Yagyuu.” Yanagi showed up at Yagyuu’s consultation room right on the dot, preferring to be punctual. He’d never had an issue with his previous psych evaluations, and had no reason to predict any differently with Yagyuu. He was pleased at the prospect of interacting with the other man, however, as he’d surmised they were quite alike in some matters.

"Welcome, Ensign, and thank you for your promptness," Yagyuu said, pulling up the evaluation form and Yanagi's general file. "This shouldn't take much time out of your day, I hope."

“I’ve scheduled protected time for this evaluation, as mandated by the UEA,” Yanagi replied, taking a seat. He looked around with some curiosity at Yagyuu’s office. “I trust you have everything you need for your office? Unfortunately we have not had much opportunity to speak.”

Yagyuu followed Yanagi's gaze. "I have very few materialistic desires, so I'm quite content. Of course, you're quite busy with Command work, so I'll be sure to reach out if I need anything additional," he said. With the addition of his mini putting green, his office was complete. "Shall we get started?"

“You may also approach any of our staff, or Akaya-kun, as you see him quite often.” Yanagi nodded and smiled placidly. “I’m ready to begin.”

"Kirihara-kun means well, but I would prefer to speak to someone with experience. Perhaps in the future once he's more fully trained." There was also the fact that the young man might misconstrue his request as something therapy-related which would likely take multiple sessions to repair.

Yagyuu did not mirror Yanagi's smile, choosing to keep his face neutral. "Do you feel supported by those around you? I am aware of your relationships with Dr Inui and Ensign Sanada, so I'm primarily curious about support from outside of those two individuals."

“Of course,” Yanagi agreed, then focused his attention on Yagyuu’s questions.

Yagyuu’s demeanor was very professional, which Yanagi appreciated. He folded his hands on his lap and answered dutifully. “Professionally, I am given almost all the support I need to do my job, though of course we are short-handed and could use a few more personnel. In my private life, I have a good roommate. My social circle also extends to Niou Masaharu and Dr. Oshitari Yuushi, and of course my colleague Petty Officer Kirihara.”

"I hope that Command receives the personnel you need. Please don't burn yourself out, Yanagi-kun," Yagyuu suggested. "While on the subject, do you feel confident in your capabilities to do your work? Are there any areas in which you may need more assistance or improvement?" He doubted the ensign was the type of person to do anything halfway; likely thought multiple steps ahead with varying degrees of success depending on the situation. It was almost a requirement with Kirihara as a member of Command and being friendly with Niou.

“I generally do not encounter any problems in my work and am fully confident in my ability to complete tasks,” Yanagi replied easily. He was observing Yagyuu, just as Yagyuu was undoubtedly observing him. “I will take into account your advice. In general, other than the short staff, the main obstacles to my work are procedural bottlenecks rather than anything I can improve on.”

So far, everything was going as Yagyuu predicted. For now. "Pivoting away from your work life, are you deriving enjoyment in your hobbies or other extracurriculars? Do you feel like you've started to lack interest in anything you previously liked?" he asked, noting Yanagi's observations as a positive attribute in his file.

“I continue to enjoy go and shogi,” Yanagi replied dutifully. It was the whole truth, though. It would probably take something completely life-changing to alter his enjoyment of these games. “In my spare time, I also like to read. I have not noticed any changes in the amount of satisfaction or joy I derive from these activities.”

"That is good to hear, ensign," Yagyuu said. If Yanagi was lying, the psychiatrist couldn't tell. "Have you been getting your normal amount of sleep? Any issues witlack of appetite?"

“I do sleep less than I would like, but it is within normal parameters and caused by work constraints rather than other reasons,” said Yanagi. And also because Sanada still insisted he exercise. “I have not noticed any changes in appetite.”

Yagyuu could understand that. With a fledgling colony, he doubted anyone in Command was getting much sleep. "I hope you are able to get some sleep in the future," he said, noting the sleep deficit on the evaluation. "Outside of work, are you experiencing any stress or feelings of sadness? If so, do you feel you are in control of those emotions?"

“Thank you.” Yanagi accepted Yagyuu’s courteous good wishes easily. “Occasionally I worry about my friends’ abilities to …make friends, but I believe they are normal emotions that I have control over. Part and parcel of life, as it were.” He said the above breezily, as if he did not dedicate 3.5% of his spare time seriously pondering over Sanada and Inui’s social integration.

"Some individuals have a harder time with social interaction and development of relationships at any level, so worry is a very valid emotion, especially if you are particularly close to the person involved," Yagyuu said, writing on the eval form. "We're almost done. Just a couple more items. Generally speaking, are you satisfied with yourself?"

“I do believe that we should strive for constant reflection and self-improvement, so I cannot say I am satisfied, in the strictest sense,” Yanagi replied, slightly amused. “However, I do understand your meaning. I accept my current self and feel no self-loathing.”

"Of course." Yagyuu could agree with that. No cause for concern. "Lastly, do you have any goals you wish to accomplish? Any dreams or hopes you want to come to fruition?" Career advancement was always a popular answer to these questions, but he hoped that Yanagi would have something less generic to say.

Yanagi’s greatest wish was for a complete overhaul of the UEA administration, but clearly that wouldn’t be wise to have on paper. “I hope my friends can get along,” was his extremely bland answer.

Not great, but better than the generic. "Anything for you, specifically?" Yagyuu asked, mentioning the ensign's wishes in his general file and not on the evaluation sheet. "Unless your friends getting along is beneficial for you in either the short or long-term."

“It is beneficial for me, yes,” Yanagi agreed.

Deciding what could be said took a further second or two of thinking. “I would like to make more friends,” Yanagi said finally. So far, he was quite pleased with the people he’d come to know in Yomi.

Yagyuu nodded and added the addendum to the file. "A noble cause," he said. "I'm sure you will be successful."

He typed up a few more notes quickly. "Unless you have anything you wish to discuss outside of your evaluation, we're done. I'll finish my report and send to Command, after which they'll make any necessary decisions." Not that Yanagi didn't already know the process.

“I have nothing more to add. Thank you for the session, Dr. Yagyuu,” Yanagi said. He highly doubted anything notable would be marked in his file, so it would be business as usual until the next review.

"Excellent," Yagyuu said. "Please feel free to reach out if you think of something later." He stood and offered his hand out to the ensign. "I hope you have a good evening, Yanagi-kun, and thank you again for your prompt attention to this."

Yanagi stood and shook Yagyuu’s hand heartily. “Of course,” he agreed readily. “Same to you, Dr. Yagyuu. Perhaps we could have a cup of tea together one day, outside of work matters.” Nodding slightly to Yagyuu, Yanagi meandered slowly out of Med Bay in a relatively good mood. Perhaps he could pay Sanada a visit, since he was close by, or see what the elder Oshitari was up to.
