mgakuto: (helping hand)
Who: Sanada Genichirou and Mukahi Gakuto
When: September 4
Where: Outpost Command room
What: Gakuto gets a very unexpected pep talk

Gakuto just wanted to do his job. He just wanted to blow things up and clear land for the mining outpost. He really didn’t want to talk. However, he wasn’t a complete idiot, and he knew that if your boss asked you to talk, you went and you talked. He headed to the command outpost, feeling very much like a rabbit in a wolf’s den once he spotted Sanada.

“You wanted to talk, Sir?” He said, his posture straight and rigid.

“Gakuto, come in. Take a seat. And no need to call me, sir. You’re not enlisted,” Sanada said as he gestured to a seat on the other side of the table they’d be using to discuss plans and work on things in the command area. Things were still rough but at least they had a few work and rest areas set up outside of the trucks and well outside of the planned blast zones.

Gakuto nodded and went to sit down, eyes fixed on the table in front of him. He still wasn’t sure where the wires got crossed in his communication with Sanada, but he would try to fix it.

"What did you want to talk about?" Gakuto asked, trying to keep his voice steady as he finally looked up at Sanada. No reason to get upset when there were several work-related things Sanada could want to talk about.

Sanada watched as Gakuto sat and tried to figure out how to approach this. He was not generally known for having a soft touch with things and he’d certainly been prodded by Yanagi more than a few times when attempting to handle teammates in their high school club days. Still, there were some things he couldn’t just ignore under the pretense of not being the official head of engineering even though him and Niou were doing nearly all off those duties.

“First, I want you to know that I think you’ve put together a good plan for opening up the mines and the preparation for it has gone well,” Sanada said. Despite the first impression of Gakuto making random explosions for the pool without notifying everyone properly, the man had proven himself to actually know what he’s doing when it came to explosive works, an area that Sanada would admit he had only the limited knowledge any general tradesman engineer required for the UEA.

Gakuto stared at Sanada for a moment, nodding as he took in the compliment. “Thanks.” He said. A simple compliment couldn’t be all Sanada wanted to talk about, but Gakuto had been working on not being so antagonistic. “I am usually very confident in my planning.” He tapped his fingers on the table nervously. “But I sense that’s not why you wanted to talk to me…”

“No. But I wanted you to know that and keep it in mind,” Sanada said. He pulled out his comms and looked at the messages they had exchanged and then at Gakuto. “Did I give you any reason to believe I didn’t think safety was important?”

Gakuto looked over the messages himself and then shook his head. “No. I just got defensive.” He admitted. “That was on me. I’m sorry.” He did feel bad that getting defensive was his knee-jerk reaction. “I just always try to prepare for disaster.”

Sanada frowned at Gakuto’s answer. While it was good to prepare for the worst possibilities when dealing with explosives on a distant planet still being explored and with various things that enjoyed attacking them, it shouldn’t lead to such defensiveness or outbursts. “Is there someone here who has been treating you in a way to cause that reaction?” He didn’t pay as close attention to all of the branches of engineering as he probably should as the acting head but he liked to think he’d notice someone being ostracized or picked on by others. He’d already had to knock some heads together in the main group for trying to start up some stupid them vs us bullshit and he wasn’t afraid to do it some more.

Gakuto shook his head. "No one here." He said softly. Sanada didn't seem like the type to want to hear any sob stories, but Gakuto knew if they were going to get anywhere, he should at least explain a few things. "I'm seeing Dr. Yagyuu for some issues in my self-esteem." He explained. "So please understand I am working on it. As for preparing for disaster… I was on a demo team whose head was overly confident and I was the casualty in that mistake, and I don't want it to happen to anyone else."

Sanada relaxed a little knowing that it wasn’t anyone around who was picking on Gakuto or making him doubt himself. It was also good to hear the man was working on his issues with a professional and Sanada wouldn’t have to try and assist him or prod him to go to therapy. While he thought he was good at encouraging others to continue doing their best, he wasn’t that great at dealing with people who were sad or depressed. “It’s good to hear you’re getting the help you need,” Sanada said after taking a moment to choose his words carefully. “And while I expect to be kept apprised of construction timelines and want you to have confidence in your work and the safety protocols we’ve implemented, I never want you to feel pressured to act faster than you can. I’ve reviewed all the work you and your team has done, I’ve double-checked our side of things here and I’m confident that we’re well within the safe range of all potential outcomes. As the lead of your specialty, you should feel and show that type of confidence, too.”

They were exploring unknown territory and despite all of the scans, tests, and long planning sessions and even longer preparations for the explosions, some crew under them were bound to feel nervous about the detonation if those in charge didn’t present a confident air. Sanada had no doubts that Byodoin was preparing for the worst sorts of various creatures to descend upon them but you’d never know it by looking at the guy. He looked like he could keep them all safe with one hand tied behind his back and wasn’t stressing about anything. That type of confidence was maybe too much to ask for from Gakuto just now, but a bit more confidence and a little less drama would be good. .

Gakuto wasn’t going to lie to himself. He was certain when he was called in here that he was going to get lectured. He certainly wasn't expecting a pep talk, or for the usually hard-nosed Sanada to be speaking to him so… kindly. The gentle hand was enough to have Gakuto sitting a little straighter, yet not so tense.

"I…" He wasn't sure what to say that didn't sound sappy or stupid. "I'll be sure my announcements are clearer and more confident." He said with a nod of his head. He did have confidence in his work, and engineering (and Sanada) were there to double check everything.

"I am sorry you've had to deal with me when my life has been a little rocky. I'll do my best to not let it affect me so much."

Sanada gave a nod at Gakuto’s words, happy that he had taken them on board so quickly and easily. He’d watch to make sure he followed through and try to encourage him to keep at it, but so far this talk had gone better than he’d hoped it would. “I have noticed you’ve been having some trouble lately, especially since the loss of Kobayashi, but I haven’t seen anything from you that made me think you shouldn’t be out here. If I thought you couldn’t do your job or saw you making mistakes, I’d pull you and send you back,” Sanada said. It wouldn’t be an easy decision to make since Gakuto was by far their best trained engineer when it came to explosives but it was better to get behind schedule than to risk an incident. He’d probably have to handle the fall out from the delay but it would hardly be worse than the things already tossed at engineering all the time.

“And before you think anything bad, it wouldn’t be as punishment. It would be to give you time to get your head sorted out so you could focus on work safely,” Sanada added on. With how shaky Gaktuo’s confidence of himself was, Sanada didn’t want to leave anything up to chance. He hadn’t always been that great with understanding mental health or how important it was but he’d had to take more than one course covering such topics for his degree and again in officer training. It was better to lose someone for a few days or weeks than to push them and have disaster strike.

Gakuto didn't wilt under the thought of being sent back. He knew all it took was one bad call to devastate a mission. "Thank you." He said sincerely. "Both for understanding and being willing to make that call, if need be." He took a deep breath, letting himself relax. "This past month has been, if you'll excuse me, a clusterfuck for my brain… but I do like my job, and I want to help you anyway I can."

He felt better. Obviously, he still had a lot of things to do before he was actually in a good place, but he was getting there. "You guys work your asses off, so if I can help, let me know."

“When you get back, take your days off to properly relax and try to sort yourself out. If you need longer, put in your request form,” Sanada said. He’d much rather be down some staff and let Dr. Yagyuu deal with the difficult part of handling emotions than having Gakuto suddenly burst into tears and/or punch someone on shift. “And the best way to help engineering is to do your final checks and blow those walls.” The sooner the explosions happened, the sooner they could get back into the tunnels and continue the work.

Gakuto felt so relieved at that. He would take Sanada’s words to heart and take some time off. He would get himself sorted out one way or another.

He grinned, thinking about his impending explosion. "Right. I'll go do those. It's gonna be a pretty great explosion." He stood up, his posture a bit more confident than when he walked in. "Thanks, Sanada-san."

“I look forward to it,” Sanada said and stood as well to walk Gakuto out of their command room. “And remember, think twice before posting on journals. A lot of the crew look up to you.” He hoped Gakuto took that as a compliment to his skills and not a rebuke that he had been a horrible role model up until now.

Gakuto actually blushed at that, because the mere thought was embarrassing, but flattering. "Yeah, you're right. I'll try to be more conscientious." He was still himself, so he could be crass and abrasive…but when it came to work things, he could be more cognizant of what he was saying on his journal. "Okay. I'll go do my checks. Keep up the great work!" He smiled as he started heading out of the room.

Sanada gave him an encouraging nod and forced himself to not reach out and ruffle up Gakuto’s hair. He was acting as an officer right now, not some proud uncle. “You, too. I’ll be on comms and helping monitor things from the top and will see you after you’re done.” He had complete confidence in his team to get it done and done well.

Gakuto nodded, politely bowing in respect before heading off. He did turn back once more and smile at Sanada before heading off back to work.
