Who: Gakuto and Hiyoshi
When: Aug 4
Where: Gakuto's office
What: Hiyoshi asks Gakuto on a date

Gakuto had been very busy for the last week or so, preparing for the mission and then for the new communal baths. This had been convenient for HIyoshi when he’d needed to avoid Gakuto to get his head on straight, but now that he was actively trying to hunt him down it was a pain in the butt. He’d resorted to hunting him down on the cameras, and when he’d finally seen Gakuto taking what looked like a lunch break in the office, Hiyoshi had hightailed it down there before Gakuto could finish and go back to things that shouldn’t be interrupted. A knock on the door, and now he waited.

Gakuto jumped at the very unexpected knock, nearly knocking his lunch on the floor. He straightened himself up and went to the door to release it. "...Hey." He hadn't been expecting Hiyoshi. "Everything alright?"

What kind of question was that to lead with, Gakuto? “Why wouldn’t it be?” Now Hiyoshi was worrying if the anxiousness in his stomach was showing on his face as well, despite his efforts against it. “I just came to see you. I can leave if you’re busy.” It was polite to give Gakuto an out, even though he knew he was only eating.

Gakuto shrugged. "I'm just not used to visitors." His face flushed when Hiyoshi said he had only come to see him. "Oh…okay! Come on in." He moved to let Hiyoshi into his office. He was trying to play it cool, but he was absolutely giddy inside.

Hiyoshi stepped in, looking around but not touching anything, for obvious reasons. “Your office is way more interesting than mine.” Hiyoshi of course didn’t have his own, just the general one shared by the other low ranking security staff. “Is the paperwork for the baths done yet?” Hiyoshi was interested in knowing about the baths, but the main purpose of the small talk was to ease himself into the real reason he came.

“I don’t share it with anyone, that’s probably why!” Gakuto grinned, moving over to his desk. “I’ve finished what I can so far, I just need to clear it with engineering and then, of course, get the okay to start blasting.” He sighed softly. “Honestly, the red tape is exhausting. Like, let me just make sure there aren’t any sandworms and get to work right?”

Hiyoshi nodded. “They’re awfully protective of a planet that’s mostly empty anyway.” Of course there were good reasons for paperwork, including oversight of materials, manpower, and safety issues, but in practice the process was much more drawn-out and multi-layered than it needed to be. “Are you going to use the baths when they’re done?”

“Yeah, and like, how are we going to colonize it if they keep stalling our progress…” Gakuto was tired. He wasn’t a fan of all the red tape. At Hiyoshi’s question he simply gave a shake of the head. Public baths were a definite no for him. “You?”

“Because of your scars?” Hiyoshi could only assume that was the reason. He nodded in response. “I’m looking forward to them. I wish they had been available after my mission, the shower wasn’t the same as getting to soak and relax.” A luxury that Hiyoshi, coming from his very traditional Japanese family, missed dearly.

Gakuto pushed his hair behind his ear and busied himself with something on his desk. “I guess? Those places are for people to go and relax, right? No need for me to be there.” He shrugged. “I’m perfectly fine with my shower.” He turned to smirk at Hiyoshi. “Glad your old bones will enjoy it, though.”

“You don’t want to relax? Or you couldn’t?” Hiyoshi remembered something about Gakuto not being huge on water, but baths weren’t big or deep enough to count, right? Unless he still meant his scars… Hiyoshi frowned. Jokes about his old man habits weren’t going to be enough to distract him from this.

“Of course I want to relax. Who doesn’t?” Gakuto scoffed. “And before you go making short jokes about the water being too deep, it isn’t that either.” He shook his head. “Could you relax if people were always staring at you?”

“You are pretty short, Gakuto-san.” But ah, there it is. Hiyoshi would like to hope that a base full of military personnel and scientists would be better than to stare at something as natural as scarring, but it seemed rude to try to convince Gakuto of this when Gakuto was the one experiencing it. The last thing he wanted was to invalidate his experiences. That didn’t mean there weren’t other options, though. “What about if there was no one else in the bath? Would you go then?”

Gakuto raised an eyebrow. “...Like you could guarantee that?” Gakuto thought about it for a moment. “...Um…maybe?” He used to go to them with Jirou and Ryou and they were always fun. “I guess I would go if I was guaranteed that only people I trust would be there.”

“I can’t be certain until the schedules and rules are finalized, but security has perks. I can make it happen.” Even if Hiyoshi has to ask Lt Cdr Byodoin for the favour personally. And here, this was his opening. “I can take you. You’d be safe with me.”

Gakuto still looked a little wary about the whole thing, but he nodded. “Okay, Hiyoshi. Keep me safe, then.” He smiled. “I’ll go with you. It’s still a long way away, though. Try to curb your excitement.” He teased.

Yes, that was a problem. Hiyoshi was glad Gakuto had agreed, but depending on any number of things, the baths could still be weeks or even months away. “What about tomorrow?”

Gakuto looked at him like he was crazy. “Tomorrow, Hiyoshi, the baths will still be just barren land.” He said slowly. “Because they haven’t been built yet.” Was Hiyoshi okay? Did he get whacked in the head by Tooyama?

Hiyoshi flushed the tiniest bit. Okay, that question had sounded really confusing without his internal thought process to go with it. It was a sure sign that maybe he wasn’t as calm and collected as he thought. “Not the baths,” he clarified. “What are you doing tomorrow?”

Gakuto grabbed a hair tie out of a drawer and tied back his hair as he mentally went through his schedule. "I've got a free work day, tomorrow. I'm basically done with the bathhouse work until they let me start blowing shit up. Why?"

Ohh. Hiyoshi’s mind went blank as Gakuto ran his fingers through his hair, full attention on the way Gakuto pulled it up and out of the way. He snaps back to reality as suddenly as he left it, embarrassed by how easily that had happened. Definitely something to worry about later, but for now: “Go on a date with me.” Hiyoshi blurted out the words with no sense of style or grace, but there they were.

Gakuto definitely thought he misheard. "Tomorrow's date is August 5." He offered helpfully. Surely that's what Hiyoshi had said. No, why would he not know the date, and why would he ask like that. "...unless…did you just ask me out on a date?"

“Yes. Tomorrow. On August 5th.” The last part probably wasn’t necessary to add, but Hiyoshi wanted to be very clear. That was the only part of his plan that had managed not to leak out of his brain: Gakuto MUST be aware that it was a romantic date. He could wing the rest, but not that part.

Gakuto was confused. "Are you teaching me some new kata or something?" He tilted his head. "I mean, I'm totally free tomorrow, I'll hang out with you!"

Here we go, Hiyoshi had expected something like this. He drew his hand down his face, then steadied himself. “Not a lesson. A date. I would like to date you. Romantically. I want to be your–” He looks away, face red, not quite able to say the word ‘boyfriend’ and finishing instead: “...date.”

Well. That was at least clear. Gakuto turned red and looked at his feet. "Oh. Um." Why was his stomach twisting and his heart racing? "O-okay…"

There. There could be no more misunderstandings after that. Hiyoshi had expected Gakuto to agree, but it was still very nice to hear, and now all the hard part was over. “There’s not a lot of places to go here, but I thought we could do something in the VR room. It’s not very fancy, but…” Come to think of it, he didn’t know what kind of dates Gakuto preferred. “Do you like fancy dates?” Was Gakuto-san going to be disappointed if he didn’t arrange him a candle-light dinner?

Gakuto lit up at the mention of the VR room. There was so much cool stuff they could do in there! But then Hiyoshi asked about fancy dates and he laughed sheepishly. "I've never been on a date, so I don't know. The VR room sounds fun, though!"

Way to raise the stakes, Gakuto. His first date ever, in the middle of nowhere with limited options. Hiyoshi had to remind himself of what Shishido had said– anything Hiyoshi did would already be miles ahead of what Gakuto was used to. Comforting in some ways, stressful in others. At least Gakuto seemed interested in the idea, that gave Hiyoshi the confidence to keep going. “We can go during the day when most people are working so it’s less busy, and we can pick what we do when we get there.”

Gakuto smiled brightly. "I want to see Earth's sky again!" He was so excited. "That's okay, right?" He liked the idea that they would have it all to themselves as well.

Gakuto’s smile was dazzling to Hiyoshi. Yeah, this was worth it. The mood was infectious, and Hiyoshi began to smile as well. “Sure, we can do whatever you want.” And at the moment Hiyoshi absolutely meant it, as long as it meant he got to see that smile.

Seeing Hiyoshi smile just made Gakuto smile even more. "That sounds great. Sounds like a perfect date to me." He walked closer to Hiyoshi and gave him a hug. "Thank you."

Hiyoshi hugged Gakuto back, but like hell he’s going to settle for that. If they were dating now that was all the more reason for them to kiss, and Hiyoshi wasn’t going to pass up that opportunity, so he does just that. He does have Ensign Yanagi’s powerpoint lingering in the back of his mind though, so it doesn’t last too long before they part. “You should finish your food while it’s still good. Or at least edible.” Things here could rarely be considered good.

Hiyoshi was so bold today! It left Gakuto a little flushed and a lot… happy. Just really, really happy. "Oh, yeah, I should. Um…see you tomorrow?" He asked, suddenly feeling quite shy.

Cute. That earned Gakuto another quick kiss. “Yeah. See you tomorrow.” And with that Hiyoshi left, before he could give in and earn himself another unsolicited powerpoint lesson.
