Who: Hiyoshi and Shishido
When: During the post-expedition checkup
Where: idk right there in the hallway or wherever it happened lol
What: Hiyoshi gets his eyes checked and Shishido gets to ask his question
The two week mission had been a long, grueling test of patience, but it was finally over. Even the decon showers had been welcome after weeks of sand and heat, and now the only thing between everyone and a nice long shower and sleep was the once over with Dr Shishido.
Hiyoshi wanted a shower as much as anyone else. The modest hospital gown was worlds better than the skin-tight nanosuit he’d been wearing for the last two weeks, but he still wanted nothing more than to rip it off and fall asleep under the drizzle of a nice warm shower. Despite this he hung back, allowing everyone ahead of him until he’s finally called for his turn. He wasn’t sure how long this would take, and it was the least he could do not to keep everyone away from their beds any longer.
Tired didn't begin to describe how Shishido felt. It'd been a long day and he was just ready to...nope, resting wasn't an option. First there were all the notes and reports to update. Then after that he could rest. Still, this last name was one of the people Shishido was most curious about. After all, Gakuto had apparently become friends with the guy and that...that meant Hiyoshi was a rare sort of person.
"Any injuries I should know about?" Shishido asked. "Any changes you've noticed since you've left like headaches, vision or hearing issues, skin irritation, or anything similar?" Because Atobe had made it abundantly clear to make sure people didn't have that one type of dirt rash.
The only thing rare about Hiyoshi was his obstinance, which was exactly why when his eyes had started hurting with only a few days to go of the mission, he had told exactly no one. It wasn’t like his contacts had never bothered him before, and this was a mission, taking them out and losing his long-distance sight (and with it his ability to spot sandworms) simply wasn’t an option, so he had endured.
Hiyoshi shifted on his feet, one of the few tells of the actual level of discomfort he was in. “My eyes are sore. I need a case so I can take my contacts out, please.” All said very calmly for someone whose eyes were completely bloodshot under his hair.
At the mention of Hiyoshi's eyes, Shishido's own went there. And while eyes might not be his field of expertise, Shishido was positive that they also shouldn't look that red and irritated. "Yeah, give me a moment," Shishido said as he went over to a cabinet and started looking for something that would work. Spotting a clean, unused sample container still in its sterile packaging, he held it out to Hiyoshi.
"What happened?" Shishido asked, curious. "Did you get sand in your eyes?" He didn't wear glasses or contacts so this was something he wasn't that familiar with. Part of him wondered if he should go grab Atobe. After all, the other guy was supposedly an expert in things dealing with sand.
Taking his contacts out was instant relief, and Hiyoshi could barely hold back a sigh.
"I don't know. Probably. I couldn't take them out to check." Hiyoshi knew he shouldn't, but he rubbed his eyes anyway. This time he did sigh, because damn that felt good.
"Eyes aren't my thing," Shishido warned. "If you think they need to be checked, I can grab Atobe." Not that that was something Shishido really wanted to do. Atobe was rather distracted with forcing Oshitari into a 'quarantine' that looked and sounded suspiciously like a date. "But honestly, if you can go a few days without wearing the contacts, that's likely to help too. Do you have glasses you could wear?"
"DON'T call Atobe. He doesn't need to know about this." That too-loud 'don't' was Hiyoshi being unable to hide his immediate and very negative reaction to Atobe's name. Atobe showing up and telling him off for one reason or another was the last thing he needed right now. "I have glasses. Just check my eyes to make sure they're not falling out and I'll wear the stupid things as long as you want." Another eye rub– this time from stress. All Hiyoshi wanted to do right now was to shower and sleep.
Interesting. Apparently Hiyoshi didn't like Atobe. Shishido filed that away in case it was ever useful. "Again, eyes aren't my thing," he warned as he took a look at Hiyoshi's eyes. He didn't see any debris in them which lent itself to the dry and irritated theory. "They look fine. I'd go with the glasses and if things don't improve over the next few days, then come back and have them looked at."
"Can I ask you a question?" Shishido asked.
Hiyoshi waited patiently while he got the once over, satisfied to know that they weren't about to fall out of his head. Yet, anyway. He nodded along to Shishido's instructions, and then again at the request. "Go ahead."
"Are you serious about being Gakuto's friend? Or are you just trying to mess with him?" Shishido asked, completely serious as he spoke. He was all for his friend expanding his social circle. Shishido just didn't want Gakuto to end up getting hurt by someone who thought it was all a joke.
This guy too? Hiyoshi's annoyance was written plainly on his face. This was probably where he should take the opportunity to clear things up between Gakuto's friends and himself, but part of him was still feeling sore about being run off from the start. "If I was messing with him, I wouldn't admit it to his best friend." Yeah. Great. That'd make an awesome impression for sure.
That was fair. Shishido could appreciate the honesty. "That makes sense," he admitted. "It's just that Gakuto doesn't tend to want to be friends with a lot of people. And it's nice to see him actually wanting to be friends with someone else." This was as much as Shishido was willing to meddle at this point. He was trusting Gakuto not to be a completely terrible judge of character and it wasn't like Hiyoshi had given Shishido any reason to doubt the guy.
“If I had friends who meddled as much as his do, I wouldn’t want to make new friends either,” was Hiyoshi’s reply. But despite Hiyoshi’s cynical words, Shishido not rising to his comment had done away with any real defensiveness he had. “I’m not messing with him, I’m not dumb enough to make enemies with people I’m stuck with for the next five years. You said it yourself, I’m ‘just rude to everyone’.” He stared directly into Shishido’s eyes as he emphasized the last part. Yes, he read that, Shishido.
Hearing his own words thrown back at him just made Shishido shrug. He wasn't going to deny it. In fact, he leaned into it. "Is it a lie?" He asked. "Or have you been treating everyone with sunshine and bubbly happiness?"
“I’m polite to the people I need to be polite to.” Which meant people who outranked him in the military and good luck if you were a civilian, because then it was based on his personal and difficult to understand scale of respect. A respect that Shishido’s even demeanor was quickly earning him. “Gakuto-san doesn’t mind it.”
Shishido made a face at hearing the 'Gakuto-san'. It just sounded weird. "Yeah, Gakuto doesn't seem to mind which is why I haven't really said anything." And as long as Gakuto didn't mind it and as long as Hiyoshi wasn't trying to mess with Gakuto's head, then Shishido didn't feel the need to interfere. "Thanks for answering the question. You're free to go when you want."
("Gakuto-san" was a carefully chosen attack on Gakuto, a carefully balanced attempt between annoying him and not using his surname. He had earned it after the Hiyokko thing.)
Hiyoshi gave Shishido a stilted bow. "Thank you, Dr Shishido. If it doesn't get better I'll tell you." He turned to leave, before thinking to add one more thing. "If you have to report to Atobe, please try to give me at least 24 hours to sleep first." But hopefully, Atobe would be too busy on his forced-date to bother anyone besides poor, poor Oshitari.
Shishido tapped the device he'd been making notes on. "It all goes into your record," he explained. "It's on Atobe to actually take the time to look." And with the way Atobe was going on and on about his Oshitari quarantine, it was unlikely the guy would get to anything else for at least the next day. "You'll probably have a day or two if he even bothers to call you back in."
"Goodie, I get a whole day's headstart to hide." And with that muttered assessment of the situation, Hiyoshi slumps off to a well-deserved shower.
