[LOG] Marui and Tachibana

Who: Marui and Tachibana
When: Nov 21
Where: Kitchen
What: Marui and Tachibana go in on operation weekly-hot-meals

A bit less than ten minutes after he’d warned Tachibana, Marui was walking into the kitchen with tablet in hand. He was on a mission, and when he stopped in front of Tachibana, he exuded a sense of purpose that wasn’t usually present. “I,” he announced, “have a plan.”

Tachibana stared at Marui, a whole lot confused. Still, Tachibana was not one to turn down a plan without at least hearing it first. "Okay, what's up?"

“Remember a while ago we talked about how it would be nice if everyone could have real food once in a while? I figured out how to make it work.” A hundred years ago, this would be the part where Marui dumped an entire box worth of paper all over the counter. Luckily for Tachibana this was the future, and all of Marui’s plans were digital. He started pulling things up on his tablet for Tachibana, which while less satisfying was much more ecofriendly, and passed it over. “We’re still in the early stages of food production, so it’s just once a week, but all the numbers are there.” As shown in his handy graph of weekly produce distribution.

Tachibana looked at the graph and plans. He was actually really impressed. “How long did it take you to compile all of this?” He asked “Do you think people would like it? I got some feedback that said it was wasteful…” Tachibana wanted to please everyone, after all.

“A while.” Marui had been working on other things too, but he wanted to make sure that this, his first and very public attempt at redeeming himself, wouldn’t fail. Along with the graphs of agriculture’s output were a two months worth of mock-up menu schedules, pages of numbers on the amount of supplies and manpower needed to follow through, and a few scientific papers on the value of variety in maintaining healthy gut flora just for luck.

He leaned over Tachibana, pulling up a file titled plans for leftovers. “Let me guess, Sanada. If he wants to keep eating nothing but algae, fine, but we’re growing food for a reason, and that reason is to eat it. We’ve got plenty of produce going into the cryofreezer for backup, a couple meals a month aren’t gonna hurt that. Besides, if you look at the food we made for the Halloween party, everything leftover was eaten within two days. It wasn’t wasted.”

Tachibana didn’t want to name any names, but he continued to look at the numbers. “You’re right. And I do still believe there is a mental health component to having a real meal.” He knew that, if nothing else, the people he fed always seemed happy afterwards. “Alright then, you’ve got me convinced.”

“Knew I would,” Marui replied with a wink. Sweet success. With Tachibana’s backing, he had the final piece he needed. “I filled out all the submission forms already, you just gotta sign your name beside mine. And make sure you read everything through, in case someone tries to quiz you on it. The case in favour is air-tight, I guarantee it.”

Tachibana did take his time to read it all before going ahead and signing it. “Alright. So, with all that signed, when do we start? Do we compile dietary restrictions to make sure there is something for everyone?” That may have been information buried in all of Marui’s graphs and whatnot. “Would it be the same day every week?”

“Same day every week, twice a day spread out a few hours from each other to catch as many people as possible on different shifts. The dietary stuff is all private info, so you’ll have to do that part. Figured we could start with a vegan option since that’s the most common one, then look into a few servings of other stuff based on how many people have other needs and are actually interested.” Marui showed Tachibana the blank spreadsheet he’d made, ready for people’s specific dietary needs to be entered. “The first few times wont be perfect, so don’t let anyone get on your ass about that. We’ve got stuff in place to adapt to new info.”

Tachibana laughed at that. He knew he was still a little raw, so criticism may hit harder than it normally would. “You’ve already got a pretty solid plan. I can fill out that spreadsheet with the info I have.” Tachibana was massively impressed with this whole plan. “I don’t want to offend you, but I’m really surprised at all this. I wasn’t expecting a plan so…concrete.”

Marui decided to take it as a compliment. “That’s what they like here, right? Data to back up your plans. If this is what it takes, this is what they’ll get.” Beating them at their own game, except it’s not a competition. Marui says all this like it’s common sense and he hasn’t been struggling against this exact system for months.

Tachibana smiled. “Yeah, that’s how most military and government bodies function.” He wasn’t used to it, himself. “Better to over-plan than under-plan.” He really was fascinated with Marui’s plan. “Mind sending these over to my device so I can read over them more?” Now that there was a plan in place, he was excited.

“It’s such a pain. Can you believe people actually join the military willingly?” Completely ridiculous. Marui could never deal with those kinds of constant rules and regulations. Even the amount he was dealing with now was pushing it. “I’m sending it all now. The papers on bacteria will shut the pro-algae faction up for sure.”

“I can’t imagine.” Tachibana was definitely a guy who would butt heads with authority, usually. He raised his eyebrow at the mention of bacteria. “Is that so?” He was definitely curious now. “Do you normally do this much research?”

“Nope.” Marui blew a big bubble and popped it loudly. “But I need to if I want to fix my reputation, so it is what it is. It’s not like it’s hard or anything.”

Tachibana stared for a moment before starting to laugh. “...Alright then. So, are we starting this week?” If they were, he wanted to be prepared.

“Depends on how long the red tape takes, but yeah, as soon as it gets through I’d like to start.” The sooner Marui got this program running, the sooner his life would start turning around. He was sure of it.

Tachibana nodded. “Well, keep me updated.” He smiled. “...Want some takoyaki? I just finished making some for Kin-chan.”

“With real octopus this time?” Marui sniffed at the air– yep, that was definitely octopus and not chicken. He grinned and grabbed a stool. “Yeah, I think I can make a little time for some of that.”
