Who: Inui and Yagyuu
When: 26th October
Where: Yagyuu's office
What: Inui's painfully boring psych evaluation
At precisely 2pm, Inui arrived at Dr Yagyuu's office, for his scheduled psych evaluation. He had experiments running that he would have to return to after, but he was curious to gather data on his roommate in the work environment. Their time together as actual roommates was very minimal, beyond some polite greetings when they passed. Inui knocked on the doorframe.
Yayguu looked up at the sound and nodded. "Please, come in, Dr Inui," he said, pulling up Inui's file. Honestly, he didn't know much about Inui, other than that his roommate's area was well kept and organized, which he could very much appreciate. Hopefully, the evaluation would go smoothly.
Inui sat down, watching Yagyuu curiously. "Thank you for accommodating my appointment time request, Dr. Yagyuu," he said and glanced at his communicator and the time. "I have experiments that will need to be looked at in… 38 minutes."
"I appreciate the promptness of your request." Yagyuu motioned to the seat in front of his desk. "As long as you are truthful in your responses, it shouldn't take longer than 30 minutes." Which would hopefully allow for Inui to get to his experiments on time.
“Of course, I see little benefit in falsifying my responses,” Inui said, taking the seat and looking at Yagyuu. Mostly because there was a high chance that Yagyuu would see through any falsehoods, which would just draw out the process, or, if they were discovered later, would require him to come back earlier than in 6 months. “Let us proceed.”
Yagyuu nodded, opening the evaluation form and grabbing his stylus for notetaking. “Have you noticed any changes in, difficulty with, or trouble sleeping over the past 6 months?” he asked. “If so, have they affected your ability to work?”
Ah, this sounded like the psych evaluation form that he had completed back on Earth. Inui shook his head. "No. My sleep schedule has a deviation of approximately 20 minutes maximum, depending on experiments. I average 6 and a half hours sleep a night. Except for during the expedition where this changes my schedule significantly… but that shouldn't factor into this as I'm now back to normal."
“I see. Any changes in appetite? Such as not enjoying your favorite foods? Eating more or less than usual?” Yagyuu didn't think there would be anything of note. So far, Inui seemed like a steadfast individual with a particular structure to his life.
While Inui certainly had data that variations like this were regular, it seemed illogical to actually occur. It was just too easy to follow a routine. “A slight variation to my diet. I have had to make adjustments to my food intake based on the calorific qualities of the algae replicator food, and am receiving all of my required daily macronutrients.” He also tracked it all closely, but given that this was a psychological evaluation, he didn’t need to bring out his spreadsheet.
That was to be expected, Yagyuu thought. Going from a typical diet to one consisting of more algae wasn’t quite the change he was asking about, but it fell in line with his expectations of this session.
“Any stress, sadness, or periods of feeling down or low since your arrival?” Yagyuu asked, as he finished up the previous section on the form. “Have you felt that any of your moods or emotions haven’t been under your control?”
"Very briefly, when I first arrived." Despite the 3 months of mental preparation that Renji was going to be on Izanagi, it had still been… momentarily unpleasant at the start. And there was a 100% chance that Yagyuu would ask him to explain, so Inui elaborated. "I cleared the misunderstanding with Renji as soon as possible. Everything else is within normal parameters."
Ah, yes, Yagyuu was all too familiar with reconnecting with someone whom he thought had all but disappeared from his life. He made a note in Inui’s chart – separate from the evaluation – about his relationship with Yanagi. “Well within normal parameters, Dr Inui,” he said, filling out the section on the report. “Do you still derive enjoyment from hobbies or projects? Are there any extracurriculars with which you have had no interest or pleasure in as of late?”
Ah, Yagyuu was filling in a separate set of information - interesting. As part of his files, as well as what was sent to the UEA? "Most of my hobbies and projects are related to my science experiments. They continue to be fruitful." Both in enjoyment and results. "I have been enjoying having both Genichirou and Renji around to play board games with. And I am continuing my work out routine every day. If anything, being here has increased my interest in my extracurricular activities."
So far, Inui was the picture of perfect mental health. If only all of his patients could be like this... well, most, anyway. Yagyuu did want to keep his job, after all.
"Excellent." He made another note in Inui's primary file about Sanada. "Is there anything in your personal life that has caused you to worry more? Anything to cause you to lose confidence in yourself or your capabilities? Have you been satisfied with yourself and your growth as a person?"
Ah, was Yagyuu now rushing through the questions since he considered Inui to be a low risk patient? Inui wished he'd brought his tablet along to be able to note down his immediate observations. "No, nothing of note. My work continues to be successful. I have a satisfactory social circle." Very straightforward.
Yagyuu nodded. “Very good, Dr Inui.” He jotted down the answers and looked to the next set of questions, internally rolling his eyes. The UEA really needed to update their psych evaluation form; it was very much stuck in the 20th Century. “Do you have any hopes or dreams you wish to accomplish? Have you been able to work towards those goals in a satisfactory manner?”
Inui actually chuckled at the next question. The problem of generic forms. “My current goals are centred around my research.” He considered Yagyuu for a moment - a difficult man to read. “My primary research into molecular manufacturing food staples has been progressing at a satisfactory rate. And even my setbacks in experiments have very beneficial results.” Inui acknowledged that in the UEA chemistry research branch, he was very uniquely fortunate. “My 5 year plan for life at Yomi is on track.”
“Is it truly a setback if it results in something beneficial?” Yagyuu asked, making note of Inui’s responses. At the very least, the scientist’s research sounded interesting. “What about your relationships? Friends, family, colleagues. Do you feel supported by them in your endeavors, personally and professionally?”
"A setback in my personal line of research, but always leaps forward in my unintentional research for the UEA," Inui admitted. He raised his eyebrows slightly at the next question. "My family supports my research and my friends … as you can see for yourself, they are very supportive." Sanada immensely so, what with how much work he'd done in customizing Inui's lab to his exact requirements.
Yagyuu filled out the final section of the evaluation. “I find that a strong support network usually provides a net positive in most areas of a person’s life. It’s good that you have such people in your life,” he said.
“And with that, we’re done, Dr. Inui. I’ll submit my report to Command and they’ll make a determination afterwards.”
“Yes, I certainly agree with that. I’m very fortunate.” Inui nodded in thanks as Yagyuu spoke and stood up - plenty of time to get back to his experiments. “Thank you, Dr. Yagyuu. I hope your other evaluations for this month go as well.”
Yagyuu watched as Inui got up. “And thank you for taking time away from your work,” he said. “I always hope they do. Good luck with your experiments.”
