[log] tezuka & yagyuu

Who: Tezuka and Yagyuu.
What: Tezuka’s psych eval.
Where: Yagyuu’s office.
When: a couple of days after the rescue mission

Tezuka grumbled to himself on his way to Yagyuu’s office. He thought having to go through a psychological evaluation was absurd, to say the least. He didn't have any problems that needed addressing at all, and no, his speeding wasn't a problem, no matter how many people thought it was. He always made sure he followed all the safety compliances and regulations, especially after his accident five and a half years ago.

He stopped in front of Yagyuu’s office and knocked. Since he was forced to go through this, he thought it would be best to just get it over with.

Yagyuu finished up his notes from his previous session – female ensign assumed her supervisor was flirting because he offered her compliments on tasks well-done, but she was just projecting her 'daddy issues' onto him – then closed out of the record. At the knock, he checked the schedule. Tezuka was a prompt five minutes early. He appreciated that.

"Please come in," Yagyuu said while opening up Tezuka's medical file on his system and quickly looking over it.

Tezuka opened the door and walked into a pristine office, Yagyuu sitting at his desk. He made a beeline to the chair in front of the doctor and sat down.

“Hello Doctor, if it were any other circumstance, I would say it is quite lovely to see you.” he cribbed. He was going to stress to Yagyuu how much he did not want to be here for the entire appointment, whether Tezuka himself liked it or not.

"Hello, Lieutenant Commander," Yagyuu said in greeting. Based on Tezuka's reply of "Why?" when he had announced the required visit, he already knew this was going to be difficult -- not that people actually enjoyed going to a therapist -- the notes in Tezuka's file had been updated to reflect that.

"Shall we dive right in?" he asked. "I would also note that this evaluation does have an effect on your position and any potential merit increases, so it will be better for you, in the end, if you're honest and forthcoming with your responses."

Ugh, the session having an effect on his career made this sound even worse. Tezuka was someone who would rather come in if he truly thought he needed any help.

“Fine,” he replied curtly. He sat up straight in the chair and folded his arms across his chest.

Yagyuu made a note of Tezuka's body language. Defiant, stubborn, potential issues with authority.

"Have you had any issues sleeping? Restlessness, inability to fall asleep, insomnia, et cetera?" he asked, still tapping away at the medical notes.

“No, I get eight hours every night.” Tezuka answered. This was already beginning to feel like a waste of time.

Yagyuu maintained a neutral expression. "Any changes in appetite, mood, interest in doing things?" he asked, skipping over the usual method of questioning. If Tezuka wanted quick, Yagyuu could deliver. All it meant was that he could get to the good parts faster. "Are you confident and/or satisfied with your abilities and yourself?"

“No changes at all,” And then Tezuka heard the question he hoped he wouldn't have to hear. He froze, but he made sure to keep a straight face. He really didn't want to answer that, especially when he still didn't know exactly why he was kicked off Earth and onto Izanagi. “Yes,” Tezuka said after a slight pause. He knew the good doctor would unfortunately pick up on this.

Yagyuu made a few more notes. It was good that Tezuka was relatively well-adjusted. So far, so good. Then he just had to make a classical therapy mistake: hesitation. He glanced away from his screen to look at Tezuka. "Do you have any insecurities that could pose a risk to yourself or others? Have there been prior concerns about your ability to fulfill your position's requirements?"

For once, Tezuka thought that he could actually answer that first question. And maybe even the second question. He knew for certain that he tried his best to never make decisions that would harm anyone, and he knew he was doing an excellent job at his position. “No and no. I excel at my job, at least according to my previous commanding officers, I am,” he replied.

But...why was Tezuka on Yomi? To just fly spacecraft for weekly maintenance? He never considered questioning his superiors when they made the decision to ship him off to this planet, but it'd been two months and he had accomplished nothing. Except for automating a few paperwork processes, but no one had really noticed, and Tezuka didn't really care about that.

Yagyuu was fairly sure Tezuka was withholding information. He pushed up his glasses, ticked off a few more boxes in the file, then continued. "Do you believe your superiors have faith in your abilities? Have you been tasked with projects or endeavors that make use of your skills and talents? Are you -- and I dislike using this word, but -- happy with the trajectory your life has taken thus far?"

He made a separate note to rewrite some of these questions. Why 'happy' was still the preferred adjective to describe one's feelings about their life was somewhat ridiculous to him. Satisfied or content would be much better to convey the appropriate tone. Damn bureaucrats.

Tezuka nodded, “Yes to all three.” He felt like rolling his eyes, the answers to these questions should've been on file from the psych evaluation he had just before he was shipped off to this desert planet. “Is there something you're looking for? You'll have to be more direct.” he said, feeling like his mind would go numb soon. Maybe after this session, he'd try to get in contact with someone on his old team to find out why he's been sent here.

Yagyuu wasn't convinced. Tezuka's lack of elaboration made him appreciate Kirihara all the more. Time to stray from the form. "Why did you choose to come to Izunagi? If you didn't choose, why do you think you are here?"

“I have no clue as to why I was sent here.” Tezuka replied curtly. He really didn't.

"If you didn't choose to come here, perhaps your superiors had reservations or concerns about your abilities," Yagyuu postulated.

Based on Tezuka's file, he didn't see any particular reasoning behind the transfer; it just looked like a random assignment, but of course, he was not privy to UEA specifics. It could be classified at a level above his lofty pay grade. "Can you think of any reasons why that could be?" Yagyuu asked. "Perhaps the crash landing that occurred influenced them."

Tezuka raised an eyebrow. “How is an accident that happened almost six years ago relevant right now?” he asked, slightly confused. He frowned at the reminder, but then shrugged. “I met the younger Chitose and her dog at the time. She helped fix my shuttle. I think that's all that’s relevant to me being here…is it?”

"You would be surprised how often incidents from the past influence the present," Yagyuu stated. "Unfortunately for you, I cannot determine if your relationship with Chitose Miyuki is relevant to your being here. Only you know what is or isn't relevant."

His lips turned slightly downwards at how difficult Tezuka was being, but he shook it off to continue. "We're almost done here, Lieutenant Commander. Just a few more questions. Have you maintained your hobbies? Do they bring you the same pleasure as they did before you came to Yomi?"

“I have no idea if my being here is even relevant to the UEA’s goals of colonizing this planet.” Tezuka answered. He let out another sigh and looked down at Yagyuu's desk. His notes, specifically. He couldn't see them well enough, but he had a gut feeling Yagyuu must've labeled him as being difficult, even though he'd answered everything to the best of his knowledge.

“My hobbies are as pleasurable on Yomi as they were back on Earth and Sagara. Marilyn has kept me good company, and I may be looking into bringing a dog from Earth.” Tezuka said, and then was reminded about Tigger. “Tigger is also going to be good company once I establish a dog sitting position with Chitose-kun.”

Given the number of individuals who did not seem to care for relations with the fairer sex, Yagyuu was inclined to believe that UEA's purpose on Izunagi was not colonization, but he kept that to himself. "So you're satisfied being merely a pilot and the occasional Command lackey?" he asked.

Yagyuu made some notes regarding Tezuka's inclination towards non-human interactions. While he couldn't deny the benefits of animal companionship, they were here for at least 5 years. "Have you established any social relationships while you have been here on Yomi? Of the non-animal or plant variety," he clarified.

Now that was a question to think about. Tezuka did not like being called a lackey, but he was also not satisfied with just flying the shuttles on base for maintenance purposes. He'd rather go on three or four day long scouting missions for the base every other week if that was possible. “Lackey is not a nice way to address one of the three lieutenant commanders on base, doctor.” he snapped. Yagyuu wanted something to write about, there, now he has something.

“Eiji is also on base, and I've been friends with him since we both joined the academy together. I'm also acquainted with Chitose-kun, as previously mentioned.” Tezuka responded. “Akutagawa is also someone I talk to on a regular basis, and I also talk to my roommate Gakuto. I have a working relationship with Ensign Yanagi and while I haven't spoken to Ensign Sanada much, I think you could call us acquaintances as well.” And then there was that walking headache Niou, who gave him a hard time when he first landed on base. “Niou is annoying, I would never want to interact with him ever again. But I think you would already know that, considering that he is an annoyance.”

Yagyuu didn't react to Tezuka's outburst, but it was an interesting reaction especially as it was true. "Would you rather I use a different word? Subordinate, underling, yes man? Do you feel as though your abilities and talents are being wasted in your current... positions?"

He wrote down the names of Tezuka's acquaintances -- having and maintaining social relationships could help in an environment such as this -- but refrained from commenting about Niou. While accurate, it seemed slightly unfair given Tezuka's relatively short time in dealing with the engineer. Now Yagyuu on the other hand... was completely justified in his opinion. "Very good," was all he said in response.

Tezuka’s eyes narrowed as Yagyuu called him a ‘yes man'. Sure, he used to be someone who used to take on too many responsibilities, but he had stopped doing that as soon as he finished graduate school. “Wasted on Yomi? Yes. But not back on Earth or any of my other assignments.” Tezuka did not like this kind of questioning, it had taken him a while to unlearn the fact that he needed to be the best of the best no matter what. And this was reminding him about how he used to be a couple of years ago.

Ding ding ding. Yagyuu got exactly the answer he wanted and made an extended note in Tezuka's chart. "That completes the evaluation. I am fully aware that a vast majority of people do not enjoy therapy or the thought of it, but if there is anything else you wish to discuss, you may do so now or at a later date," he said, adjusting his glasses before continuing. "I don't recommend waiting until your next required evaluation, Lieutenant Commander."

Ugh. Tezuka did not like that tone in Yagyuu’s words, but then he didn't really have much to say as the doctor ended the session. “I have nothing to talk about, as I've expressed multiple times during this session.” He stood up, holding his hand out to shake Yagyuu’s. “I will be off. Please let me know when I would have to come in the next time via comms, I’m not looking forward to it.”

Yagyuu also stood, taking Tezuka's hand and shaking it before sitting back down. "I'll make note of that. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter," he said as Tezuka headed for the door. "I hope the rest of your day goes well."

He turned his attention back to his screen to type up his report while the session was fresh in his mind. Thankfully for Tezuka, he passed.
