[Log] Marui, Yanagi

Who: Yanagi and Marui
When: After Kirihara’s post about breaking the origami bots
Where: Rec Room
What: Futile attempt to stall Yanagi while Kirihara “fixes” the bots

Why was he doing this again? Marui had no clue besides that he had apparently formed some kind of sibling bond with Kirihara in the week they’d spent together. Little brothers, his only weakness. He sighed and slid bonelessly down the rec room couch he was waiting on– he wasn’t sure if Yanagi would even show up, since apparently he’d already seen through the whole thing. Maybe he was on the way to engineering right now to catch Kirihara in the act. If that was the case, there was nothing Marui could do about it.

The rec room doors slid open with a hiss, revealing a silhouette barely visible in the harsh afternoon lighting of the base. The head of the figure swiveled immediately in Marui’s direction, before the person took a step into the softer lighting of the lounge. It was Yanagi, of course, out for blood entertainment.

Ohh, Yanagi planned that. He totally planned that. Could the guy not be creepy for like, one second? Marui straightened up in his seat, mentally preparing as well as he could. He didn’t have to make Yanagi believe him, he only had to keep his attention as long as possible. He could do this. Marui put on a strained smile, and waved Yanagi over.

Yanagi made his way to the sitting area and sat on an armchair across from Marui, crossing his long legs and folding his hands in his lap. “How may I assist you today, Mr. Marui?” he asked, with a bland smile. He looked calm and impassive, but really, Yanagi was mostly amused.

“Heyyy, how’s it going?” Passive. Unreadable. This guy was a nightmare. Marui mentally grimaced. “It’s probably nice to stretch your legs after being cooped up in command all day, huh? I could never do a job like that.”

“It’s going reasonably well, thank you,” replied Yanagi politely. Marui’s discomfort was so palpable he was practically broadcasting it to outer space. “We all have our duties, Mr. Marui. Needs must, as I’m sure you know.”

Lying directly to military personnel who knew he was lying might have had something to do with that discomfort, with the whole military being under the thumb of the UEA and everything. Pretty fair reasoning, in Marui’s opinion. “I’m just about done editing the videos for this month, so they’ll be ready in time to send out with the stuff on the 30th. Just gotta decide what to do with my personal allowance now.”

“I’m glad to see your… rehabilitation… is going well,” said Yanagi with a slight nod. “I’m sure you’ll find some way to spend it, whether it be on drinks at the bar or speciality ingredients from Sagara.” He maintained eye contact with Marui. “I also understand you are getting along well with certain people on the base? That is commendable.”

Rehabilitation. So everything must be on his file after all. Marui wasn’t sure if knowing that for sure was a good thing or a bad thing, but he did know that hearing it like that made his stomach drop. In an attempt to shake it off he latched onto the new topic like a liferaft, even though it meant his pre-stalling would be cut short. “Haha, yeah… that’s what I wanted to ask you about. You’re friends with Sanada, right? Like, his best friend?” Of course he was, everyone knew he was. Sanada and Yanagi were practically married.

“Yes,” affirmed Yanagi, though he doubted Marui actually needed confirmation of this. Rather, to get Yanagi to spend more time here, Marui would try to shift the conversation towards something that he would try to frame as a problem, but was not actually a problem. “How can you get him to not dislike you, is perhaps what you wanted to ask?”

Real creepy having your mind read like that, Yanagi. Was Marui that obvious? But still, he ventured forward. “Right in one, haha. Like, people not liking me is one thing, I can handle a little rejection, but he makes it sound like he’d jettison me into space if the shuttle was overweight, you know?”

“Genichirou just considers your profession non-essential to the colony,” Yanagi replied. To a person he liked, or was motivated to have them get along with Sanada, he would be kinder or offer some suggestions, but Marui? Marui was purposefully being an obstruction. Even if Yanagi found this mildly entertaining, he was disinclined to let it pass.

“He will not change his mind,” he concluded. “Is there anything else?”

“Wow. Way to crush my hope right out the gate.” Marui grimaced, and it was probably the most honest expression he’d made up until this point. “Doesn’t the guy understand how funding works? …ah, whatever. You gotta have at least some hints for me. Does he have any hobbies? Favourite foods??” Something? Anything????

“Using that information will not yield the desired result,” Yanagi replied. “Genichirou is a very discerning person.” Offering another bland and possibly slightly unsettling smile, Yanagi continued, “in fact, the probability of him warming up to you, at this point in time, is the same as Akaya actually managing to fix the origami bots.” i.e., zero.

Marui knew Sanada didn’t like him. He didn’t care that Sanada didn’t like him. But somehow, hearing Yanagi say it outloud like that, so certain and blunt, pissed him off. “Yeah, well time keeps moving and situations change.” …And then the rest of the sentence caught up with him. “...Shit. I told him you already knew. This is so stupid.”

“Nonetheless, I am pleased that someone is looking out for Akaya, even if their good intentions are misplaced,” said Yanagi, standing up. “Thank you for taking care of him. I should go retrieve him now.”

Sigh. Well, Marui had tried. “At least give me a minute to warn him and give him a head start.”

“I am not actually angry with him, but he needs to return the tools and be appropriately reprimanded,” Yanagi informed Marui, walking towards the exit. “Warnings will not help him hide. Have a pleasant afternoon, Mr. Marui.”
